Giants vs Padres Analysis
The San Diego Padres visit Oracle Park to play the San Francisco Giants in the first of a three game weekend series. Staff ace Sean Manaea gets the start against Jakob Junis.
The Friars are playing well on their current road trip, taking two of three games from both the Braves and Phillies. The Giants return from Colorado where they won two of three from the Rockies.
Padres Preview
San Diego has figured out how to win without Fernando Tatis Jr. and in a variety of ways. In Atlanta they won high-scoring games, and in Philly they won a couple of low-scoring affairs.
Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer are powering the offense while the pitching staff has improved to a 10th best team ERA.
Two of the best moves San Diego made before the start of the season was to hire veteran manager Bob Melvin, and trade with the A’s for tonight’s starter Sean Manaea. Melvin has been a steadying influence in the clubhouse, and is one of the best skippers in Major league Baseball.
Manaea has a 2-3 record in seven starts with a 3.77 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. He’s performed like he did with the A’s, giving up just three runs or less and going at least six innings in all but one start.
No real problems with walks or the long ball, giving up just over one home run per nine innings and about 1.5 walks per nine.
Giants Preview
The Giants return from Colorado, and hitters that play their first game away from altitude usually experience the Coors Field letdown, leaving the most hitter-friendly park for a less-friendly yard.
Starter Jakob Junis has excellent numbers to start the year. In 20.2 innings and four starts, the right hander has a 1.74 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP with 18 strikeouts and only four walks.
These are much better than his career numbers – a 4.70 ERA and 1.34 WHIP – and time will tell if he’ll regress back to the hurler he was in Kansas City, or the Giants pitching coach has worked his magic again to improve another new arm.
Giants vs Padres Prediction
The steam is going towards the over and the Giants, but these line moves are a little confusing to me. It’s hard to pick a side and I think the Coors Field hangover for the Giants plus the coast-to-coast travel for the Padres – plus good starting pitchers – should put a damper on scoring.
This isn’t a game I’m running to the window to bet, but I’ll lean towards the 1st 5 innings under 4 runs scored.
Prediction: 1st 5 innings Under 4 Runs Scored
