Giants vs Rockies Analysis

The Colorado Rockies take on the San Francisco Giants in Oracle Park in the second of a three game series, after the Giants took the first game 8-5 behind a strong six innings from Carlos Rodon, who struck out 12. Tonight right-hander Antonio Senzatela takes the mound against southpaw Alex Wood.

Rockies Preview

Monday night’s game was the Rockies road version of the movie Groundhog Day: Keep the game close in the first five innings, watch the other team figure out your starting pitcher… and get a few more runs off your bullpen.

Although the Giants only got five hits off starter Austin Gomber, they made the most of them with five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, and tacked on three more from the two relievers. Colorado got three consolation runs in the top of the ninth against former teammate Jake McGee, but it was too little and too late.

Antonio Senzatela has a decent 3.75 ERA in five starts and 24.0 innings, but a really inflated WHIP of 1.88, only seven strikeouts – and an opposing batting average of .404.

With the exception of the Dodgers in his opening start, the teams he’s faced haven’t been that great: the Cubs, Tigers, Reds and Nationals. Now he goes up in class against one of the better teams in the National League.

“Senza” has never been a big strikeout pitcher, averaging two K’s per three innings of work over his career. But he’s pitched to contact way too much this season and needs to figure out how to miss more bats, or else he won’t be in the starting rotation much longer.

Giants Preview

Starter Alex Wood is 2-2 over his first five starts in 24.2 innings with a 4.38 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 26 strikeouts. He’s allowed 25 hits, seven walks and four home runs – a little problem giving up the long flies, but pretty good overall.

Giants hitters have gotten better the past couple of weeks, improving to an 11th-best OPS of .700. In Monday night’s game, they seemed to have the Rockies pitching approach figured out, striking out just three times and getting 11 hits.

Although their current record is 16-13, it’s becoming obvious that Colorado doesn’t have the pitching talent to compete in the NL West.

One bright spot for the Rox: Charlie Blackmon has hit Wood pretty well in his career, going 13-for-27 with seven RBI. Chuck Nazty didn’t hit against Rodon Monday night, but given his career numbers, should be in the lineup tonight.

Giants vs Rockies Prediction

This run total seems really low with Senzatela (who’s pitched poorly this season) and Wood, a left-handed pitcher who’s not as overpowering as Rodon. The weather forecast calls for wind gusts from the WNW – going out to center and right-center field – from nine up to 25 mph.

Combine this with a Rockies bullpen that has the highest ERA in baseball and a Giants pen that’s regressed over the past week, I don’t see how this game stays under seven runs. That’s why I’ll take the full game over.

Prediction: Over 7.5 Runs Scored Total
