Houston Astros vs Miami Marlins Analysis
The Miami Marlins visit Minute Maid Park to play the Houston Astros for the first in a three game series. Right handers Pablo Lopez and Luis Garcia take the bump in what should be a good pitching matchup.
Miami comes off a seven game homestand where they split four games with the Giants and swept three from the Nationals.
The ‘Stros lost two of three to an improving Mariners club at home, and hope to get back on the winning track.
Miami Marlins Betting Preview
If you’ve followed baseball for the last few years, you tend to think of teams in a certain way. When you think of the Miami Marlins, really good pitching but not so great hitting comes to mind.
The pitching is still solid with a 12th best staff ERA of 3.75, but the hitting has improved quite a bit up to a 12th best OPS of .718 (tied with the Astros) and a 4th best OPS against right handed pitchers.
Starter Pablo Lopez has put up some really good numbers in 2022. In 11 starts and 66.0 innings, he’s put up a 2.18 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, struck out 67 and allowed 17 walks and six home runs.
Nine of his eleven starts he’s allowed three earned runs or less, and Lopez has had five outings with no earned runs. He comes off one of his poorer starts of the year June 4, where he gave up four earned runs in 7.0 innings versus the Giants at home.
Houston Astros Betting Preview
The Astros have rounded into mid-season form both on the mound and at the plate. Houston has the 3rd lowest team ERA at 3.01 and a 1.15 WHIP with the lowest bullpen ERA in MLB.
Hitting has improved to where they’re in the top half of baseball in OPS, and they’re looking more like the team we saw play the Braves in last year’s World Series.
Right-hander Luis Garcia has also put up solid numbers this season. In 10 starts and 55.2 innings, the Venezuelan native has a 3-4 record, a 3.07 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP, struck out 53 and allowed 16 walks plus eight home runs.
Houston Astros vs Miami Marlins Prediction
Although both teams hit right-handed pitching well (4th and 8th best OPS), I see this shaping up as a lower-scoring pitcher’s duel. With Lopez on the mound, I think Miami has a decent shot to win this game.
However, their bullpen has a 20th best ERA while the Astros have the lowest ERA in baseball at 2.62. That’s why I like the better wager as the full game under 8 runs scored.
Prediction: Under 8 Total Runs Scored
