Houston Astros vs New York Mets Analysis
The New York Mets visit Minute Maid Park to take on the Houston Astros in the first of a quick two game set. The Mets took three of four from Miami at Citi Field last weekend, while Houston took two of three from the White Sox at home.
It’s a battle of right handers as Trevor Williams (1-3, 3.53 ERA) takes the bump against Jose Urquidy (5-3, 4.99 ERA).
Houston is a -125 favorite, the Mets are a +115 underdog and the run total is 9. New York is 45-24 with the best record in the NL East, while the Astros are 41-25 and sit atop the AL West.
New York Mets Betting Preview
The Mets are a top 10 team at the plate and on the mound, with a 10th best ERA of 3.80 and a 1.22 WHIP, plus a 6th best OPS of .736 and MLB-best team average of .261. They’ve done it without two of their best starters most of the year in Jacob DeGrom and Max Scherzer.
The Metropolitans love to hit against right handed pitching, as they have a 3rd-best OPS of .751 and lead MLB with a .268 average.
Trevor Williams has been a middle reliever and spot starter for the Mets, with mixed results. In 12 games, five starts and 35.2 innings, he has a 3.53 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP and struck out 33.
He hasn’t gone deep into games, only going five innings in two starts. There’s a good chance we could see the Mets bullpen fairly early in this contest, but they’ve been solid this year with a 12th best ERA of 3.64 with a 1.24 WHIP.
Houston Astros Betting Preview
Houston has come alive at the plate the last few weeks, as they’re in the top 10 in MLB in OPS at .728 with a 19th best .238 team average.
The Astros may not be the most consistent lineup, but they are one of the most dangerous hitting teams in baseball. They’re tied for 4th in most home runs with the Phillies at 87.
Jose Urquidy has pitched well before this year, but has struggled in 2022. Through 12 starts and 61.1 innings, he’s put up a 4.99 ERA, a 1.52 WHIP and struck out 47. His career ERA is 3.92 over 239.0 innings with a solid 1.15 WHIP, so we know he can pitch a lot better.
Although it’s a small sample size of four home starts, Urquidy has a 2.78 ERA in 22.2 innings, but with a bloated 1.41 WHIP. This last number could be a problem against a Mets lineup that can hit right-handed pitching well.
Houston Astros vs New York Mets Prediction
The Mets are 3rd and the Astros 6th best OPS versus right handed pitching, and they should be able to do some damage against both starting pitchers. We’re getting good value on the 1st 5 innings over, and that’s my pick for today.
Prediction: 1st 5 Innings Over Total Runs Scored
