Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners Analysis
The Seattle Mariners visit Minute Maid Park to play the Houston Astros Monday night in the first of a three game series.
Southpaw Robbie Ray takes the bump against hard-throwing right-hander Cristian Javier. This is the first game home for the ‘Stros after a successful nine game road trip, going 6-3 in Seattle, Oakland and Kansas City.
The Mariners won two of three games on the road each at Baltimore and Texas, and will finish their roadie in Houston.
Seattle Mariners Betting Preview
Seattle enters this game with a record of 24-30, good for fourth in the AL West, and have a 12-20 record on the road. The M’s have a 16th best team OPS at .707, and .239 team batting average, a 21st best staff ERA at 4.14 and team WHIP of 1.27.
This team hits better against right-handed pitchers – like the one they’ll face tonight in Javier – with a 13th best OPS of .717 and batting average of .246.
Starter Robbie Ray was the big free agent signing for this club in the off-season, but hasn’t quite met the expectations of his 5-year, $115 million deal.
Through 11 starts and 65.2 innings, the southpaw has a 4.93 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP with 74 strikeouts. He averages about six innings per outing, which is good, but he’s had a recent problem with the long ball, giving up seven homers in his last six starts.
Control has also been somewhat of an issue, giving up 24 free passes this season – which comes to more than three walks per nine innings.
Houston Astros Betting Preview
Houston is back to where we thought they’d be at this time of year: At the top of the AL West and one of the best teams in the American League with a 35-19 record, second only to the Yankees.
Their pitching staff is near the top of MLB with a 3rd best ERA of 2.93 and a 1.13 WHIP, and their hitting is near the middle of the pack with a 14th best OPS of .715 and .234 team batting average.
One of the team’s Achilles heels is hitting against left-handed pitchers, as they have a 22nd best .660 OPS and .213 batting average. They lost their three game series in Seattle May 27-29 two games to one, scoring a combined four runs.
Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners Prediction
There are some interesting and conflicting trends for this contest, which makes it a challenge to handicap.
Although Robbie Ray isn’t pitching like the $115 million man Seattle expected, the Astros haven’t hit southpaws very well this year.
The Mariners head into the last leg of their nine-game roadie, and Houston will play their first game at home after their nine-game trip – which is usually a good spot to fade a team.
This will be the first start this season for Ray against the Astros, which should give the veteran lefty an advantage. And given the M’s recent success against Houston, I like their chances to at least keep this game close. That’s why I’ll lean to Seattle on the run line.
Prediction: Seattle +1.5 Run Line
