Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners Analysis
The Seattle Mariners finish up a three game series at Minute Maid Park against the Houston Astros, both teams having split the first two games.
It’s a right-handed duel in the Lone Star state with Logan Gilbert going up against Jose Urquidy. The Astros won game two last night 4-1 behind 12 strikeouts from Justin Verlander. Houston is a -136 favorite while Seattle is a +126 dog and the total is 8.5 runs.
Seattle Mariners Betting Preview
Through his first 11 starts of 2022, Logan Gilbert has been pret-ty. pret-ty good, as Larry David would say.
The Mariners righty hasn’t been lit up for a lot of runs in any of his outings, and only given up four earned runs or less in every single start. Gilbert has also averaged over six innings per game, which makes it easier on Seattle’s bullpen.
His last start against Houston was on May 28 in Seattle where he threw seven shutout innings, struck out five and scattered four hits.
Gilbert has made seven road starts compared to four at home, and his numbers are slightly better away from T-Mobile Park with a 1.96 ERA and 0.99 WHIP.
Houston Astros Betting Preview
Jose Urquidy hasn’t had a great 2022 campaign. In 10 starts and 51.0 innings, he’s compiled a 4.76 ERA and 1.51 WHIP with 40 strikeouts.
He’s only issued eight free passes, but given up nine home runs. And hIs advanced analytics when it comes to hard contact are not good.
Expected slugging % is .597, XWOBACON is .467, expected ERA is 6.11, and he’s in the bottom 10th percentile of MLB pitchers in seven categories. Ouch.
He’s had two road starts against the Mariners this year, and his stat line had a lot of crooked numbers. In 8.2 innings of work Urquidy gave up 20 hits, 11 earned runs, struck out six, walked three and gave up two home runs.
However, the Astros righty has pitched much better in his three home starts, with a 1.47 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 16 strikeouts in 18.1 innings of work. The opponents in these games were Toronto, Detroit and Kansas City, with only one good hitting team in this group (the Blue Jays).
Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners Prediction
Urquidy’s last four starts haven’t been good, and I’m not sure the Mariners are the team where he can get things turned around.
Logan Gilbert has been a better and more consistent pitcher this year, and even on the road I’ll give him the edge. That’s why I’ll lean to the Mariners on the 1st 5 innings run line +0.5.
Prediction: Mariners 1st 5 Innings Run Line (+0.5 runs)
