Kansas City Royals vs Houston Astros Analysis

The Houston Astros head into Kauffman Stadium on Friday night for the first of three games against the Kansas City Royals.

The Royals endured a three game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday evening, dropping their record to 16-33. Meanwhile the Astros completed a three game sweep over the Oakland Athletics, upping their record to 33-18.

The Royals came out on top 4-3 in last seasons head-to-head series. Houston righty Jose Urquidy gets the nod, while Kansas City hopes Brady Singer can help them right the ship. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 PM EST/5:10 PST.

Royals Flushed Last Series Away

The Kansas City Royals come into this game on a four game losing streak and are now sitting at the bottom of the American League Central standings.

The Royals are also now tied for the league’s worst run differential at -77. Kansas City is fresh off a 2-7 road trip, including a three game sweep in Cleveland that concluded with a 4-0 shutout. KC starter Brad Keller allowed four runs on six hits in six innings to pick up his 6th loss of the season.

No player had an extra-base hit but Andrew Benintendi went 3 for 4 with three singles. The Guardians outscored the Royals 19-6 in the three game stretch.

The Royals are bottom of the barrel across the board offensively, ranking 26th in runs, 27th in homeruns and 26th in slugging percentage. Brady Singer gets the start on Friday night, he is 2-0 on the season with a 2.49 ERA across three starts and six overall appearances.

He earned a victory in his last start, beating the Minnesota Twins 7-3. Singer tossed 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking none.

The Royals pitching staff is also rated poorly. They have an overall team ERA of 5.09 that ranks 27th and a bullpen ERA of 4.76 that ranks 28th.

Alvarez Carries Astros

The Houston Astros have won four games in a row after completing a three game sweep over the Oakland Athletics with a 5-4 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

The Astros came into the top of the 9th trailing 3-1 but Yordan Alvarez came through with a clutch three RBI double. The base clearing double pushed the score to 5-3 following an Alex Bregman walk with bases loaded. Ryan Pressly slammed the door shut for his 10th save of the season.

He did allow a run but that only affected run line bettors. Alvarez is having an incredible season thus far, with a .272 batting average, 14 homeruns and 31 RBI.

The Houston offense is boom or bust as they rank 22nd in runs scored & 25th in batting average, while ranking 4th in homeruns and 11th in slugging percentage. The Astros currently occupy first place in the American League West with a 5.5 game lead over the Los Angeles Angels.

They will look to Jose Urquidy to keep the Astros train rolling. Urquidy is 4-2 on the season with a 4.80 ERA across nine starts and 45 innings.

He got tagged for five earned runs on 12 hits in only 4.2 innings in his last start against the Seattle Mariners. Urquidy will be backed by a bullpen with the best team ERA in the game at 2.48. The Astros actually own the top team ERA in the MLB at 2.84.

Kansas City Royals vs Houston Astros Prediction

The Houston Astros are the favorite at -140, while the Kansas City Royals sit at +120 with a total of 8.5. We have two teams clearly going in opposite directions here, the Astros winning four straight and the Royals losing four straight.

The Astros also have a tremendous bullpen edge, ranking 1st in ERA compared to the Royals who rank 28th. The one advantage Kansas City has is in starting pitching.

However, Urquidy should be able to hold his own and Houstons veteran hitters should be able to work counts to up Singers pitch count and chase him. Let’s roll with the Astros to continue their winning ways.

Prediction: Houston Astros Moneyline -130
