Kansas City Royals vs Los Angeles Angels Analysis
The Los Angeles Angels and Kansas City Royals begin a three game series from Kauffman Stadium on Monday night.
The Royals prevailed in two of three home games against the Tampa Bay Rays despite dropping the first game. Meanwhile the Angels were able to salvage the final game of three in Atlanta.
Two veteran righties will be going head-to-head as Noah Syndergaard gets the nod for Los Angeles, while Zack Greinke toes the rubber for Kansas City. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 PM EST/5:10 PST.
Angels Send Out Syndergaard
The Los Angeles Angels snapped their five game losing streak with a 9-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.
Reid Detmers tossed five scoreless innings and the bullpen did the rest. Taylor Ward went 3 for 5 with his 13th homerun and Max Stassi had a double, triple and three RBI.
This Angels lineup has fallen well below expectations as they rank 26th in batting average, 27th in on-base percentage and 23rd in slugging percentage.
They now sit well short of a playoff spot with a 40-55 record. Noah Syndergaard has been a relatively average pitcher with a 5-7 record and 4.00 ERA. He allowed three runs in only four innings in his last outing against the Houston Astros.
He has been a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when it comes to pitching away from home, with a 5.96 ERA & .295 OBA on the road compared to a 2.96 ERA and .211 OBA at home.
Royals Turn To Greinke
The Kansas City Royals have won two straight games following a four game losing streak. They came out on top in their three game set against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 4-2 victory at home on Sunday.
Starting pitcher Kris Bubic impressed with seven innings of two run baseball and leadoff man Whit Merrifield went 2 for 5 with two runs scored. Regardless of that outcome, the Royals have an anemic offense.
They do rank 11th in batting average, but only 20th in on-base percentage and 22nd in slugging percentage. They currently have baseballs 5th worst record at 38-57. The crafty veteran Zach Greinke will look to carry the momentum of two straight victories into his start on Monday night. Greinke is 3-6 with a 4.64 ERA on the season.
He gave up four runs on eight hits in only four innings in his last outing against the Toronto Blue Jays. However Greinke has been lights out at home with only five runs allowed in his last five at Kauffman Stadium.
Kansas City Royals vs Los Angeles Angels Prediction
The San Diego Padres are heavy road favorites with a -165 money line, while the Detroit Tigers sit at +140 with a total of 8. This is actually a tough scheduling spot for San Diego, having to travel from New York after a nightcap.
However the Padres still hold a tremendous edge in talent with the motivation to secure a playoff spot. Manaea has four quality starts in his last five games and Hutchinson struggled going into the break. Let’s roll with San Diego, but for +105 odds on the run-line.
Prediction: San Diego Padres -1.5 +105
