LA Angels vs Kansas City Royals Analysis

The Kansas City Royals visit the Los Angeles Angels in the last of a three-game series. Southpaw Daniel Lynch (3-6, 5.19 ERA) takes the mound against right-hander Shohei Ohtani (5-4, 3.28 ERA).

Royals Enjoying the West

Although they haven’t played well for most of the year, something about southern California agrees with the Royals’ hitters. They won Monday night’s game 6-2, and Tuesday night’s game 12-11 in ten innings behind a combined 9 RBI effort from Carlos Santana and Bobby Witt Jr.

Witt Jr. has been a great addition to the Royals’ lineup, hitting third. Whit Merrifield and Andrew Benintendi have also improved at the plate since the rookie got called up. KC still needs a lot of help in their starting rotation and bullpen, but the offense is trending in the right direction.

Starter Daniel Lynch has struggled in his 2022 campaign, but has had a few good outings this year. On April 26 in Chicago he threw six shutout innings against the White Sox, and is coming off a good start in Oakland where he went 5.0 innings and gave up four hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out 10.

In 12 starts and 59.0 innings he has a 5.19 ERA, a 1.53 WHIP and 60 strikeouts. Although he has major league K ability, he’s had a problem with control – giving up 25 free passes and nine long flies. And he’s surrendered four home runs in his last three starts.

He averages just under five innings per start, so there’s a good chance the Royals will have to go back to a bullpen where almost every reliever made an appearance Tuesday night.

The MVP

After last night’s epic performance at the plate, Shohei Ohtani proved once again why he’s the reigning American League MVP. He went 3-for-4 with two home runs and eight RBI, and one of the long flies was a three-run blast in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

His pitching has also been pretty good in 2022. In 11 starts and 60.1 innings, he has an ERA of 3.28, a WHIP of 1.09 and 77 strikeouts. Ohtani’s control has been excellent as he’s only walked 15 hitters and allowed eight home runs – that’s just over one long fly per nine innings.

LA Angels vs Kansas City Royals Prediction

The Halos haven ‘t been good against lefties this year, sitting No. 25 in OPS (.662) with a team batting average of just .231 against left-hand pitching.

While Los Angeles hasn’t hit southpaws well this year, Daniel Lynch is a very hittable pitcher who has a lot of crooked numbers in his stat line. Coming off the momentum of last night, Ohtani should be fired up and ready to perform well to take a load off his team’s bullpen and to try and salvage the last game of this series.

After Tuesday night’s game, I trust both of these bullpens about as much as the latest NFT cryptocurrency. That’s why I’ll lean to the Halos on the first five inning run line.

Prediction: Angels First Five Run Line (-0.5)
