LA Angels vs Miami Marlins Analysis

The Miami Marlins visit the Los Angeles Angels Monday night, with Elieser Hernandez facing Michael Lorenzon.

New Year, Same Story?

Miami comes off a weekend series in San Francisco, where they lost two out of three. With the exception of Opening Day, the Saturday and Sunday games looked like a repeat of last season: Great pitching but not much offense, scoring just two runs each game.

Hernandez is a solid starting pitcher who had a great spring training, giving up only two hits and no earned runs in six innings of work. The Venezuelan native is not your typical No. 4 starter, as the Marlins starting rotation is one of the best in baseball. Although he struggled with injuries in 2021, he could easily be a No. 3 or higher starter for more than a few MLB teams.

Home Cooking for Lorenzen

The Angels had a tough opening series against the Astros, where they dropped three out of four. But even with Trout and Ohtani in the lineup, the Halos still struggled to score runs. With the exception of six runs Friday night, they plated just four runs in the other three games.

Orange County native Michael Lorenzen comes back home to pitch for the Angels after seven seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. Working as a reliever he had up and down seasons, but pitched very well in 2019 with a 2.92 ERA in 73 games.

The Great American Ballpark is one of the least pitcher-friendly yards in baseball, and over time can mentally wear a hurler down. Lorenzen is also making a change from the bullpen to the starting rotation.

Bleacher Report did a study of all 30 MLB stadiums and Great American Ballpark was the 5th-most hitter friendly in baseball, while Angels Stadium of Anaheim was the 7th most pitcher-friendly yard. A change of scenery and pitching role, plus coming back home to Orange County could be what the veteran right-hander needs to rebound from a disappointing 2021.

LA Angels vs Miami Marlins Prediction

After watching and following pitchers around MLB this past weekend, the shorter pre-season has kept most starters on a reduced pitch count. We should probably consider the first two or three weeks of the season as extended Spring Training.

I wouldn’t make any innings pitched prop bets with confidence until late April or early May. Although neither starter will probably get in five innings of work, both teams’ relievers have generally pitched well and their bats are struggling to start the season. That’s why I’ll take under 9.5 runs as my best bet.
