LA Angels vs Toronto Blue Jays Analysis
The Toronto Blue Jays travel to southern California to play the Los Angeles Angels in the first of a four-game series. Toronto comes off a split with the Cardinals in St. Louis, and the Angels won a home series versus the Rangers. Both teams are among the best in the American League, as the Blue Jays have a 23-20 record and the Halos are 27-17.
Bats Cooling Off
The Jays started the year swinging hot bats, but they’ve cooled off quite a bit. They’re 20th in team OPS at .680 and a team average of .232. Although their numbers haven’t been as good as expected, this is still a dangerous lineup with Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., Bo Bichette, Matt Chapman and George Springer.
Toronto starter Hyun-Jin Ryu has pitched really well against the Angels in his career with a 2-0 record, 0.98 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in four career starts. The veteran has also pitched well in the month of May throughout his career, and he’s 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in his two May starts this year. The Jays pen is also second best in baseball with a 2.01 ERA over their last 10 games.
Home Cooking in Anaheim
In seven starts and 38.1 innings, Ohtani has compiled a 2.82 ERA with an impressive 1.02 WHIP and 53 strikeouts. He has a 2.30 ERA in three starts at home this year, and in 21 career home starts, he’s 9-2 with a 2.08 ERA and 1.04 WHIP.
The Angels are one of the top hitting teams in baseball, although they don’t hit quite as well against left-handers, with a 10th best .723 OPS. They also have a 2nd best run differential in the American League at +53, so when they win, they usually win by a decent margin.
LA Angels vs Toronto Blue Jays Prediction
Although the Angels play well at home and Ohtani is one of the best pitchers in baseball, Toronto comes into this game in a good situation. Ryu trends well pitching against the Halos and during the month of May, and the Jays bullpen has pitched well over the last 10 days. And after a off day on Wednesday, they’ll be well rested and have all arms available if needed.
While the starting pitching matchup is just about even, the visitors have an edge late in the game with their relievers. That’s why I’ll take Toronto on the run line, and go ahead and sprinkle a little on the money line.
Prediction: Toronto +1.5 Runs (-145)
