Los Angeles Angels vs Boston Red Sox Analysis
The Boston Red Sox visit the Los Angeles Angels in the last of a four game series, and look for a sweep after winning the first three games.
Two right-handers face off tonight in Orange County as Nick Pavetta takes the bump against Shohei Ohtani.
The Angels are a slight home favorite at -113, the Red Sox are a live road dog at +103, the run total is 8 with the over at -105 and the under at -115.
Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview
Angels ownership didn’t like how the team was playing after an extended losing streak, and it cost Joe Madden his job Tuesday afternoon. Most of the time when a team fires the manager, it leads to a win – but that hasn’t been the case the last two days.
Third base coach Phil Nevin was named interim manager, and we’ll see what he can do to turn this talented team around.
It’s been a downturn both on the mound and at the plate for the Angels, as they’ve regressed to the middle of the pack.
The Halos’ team ERA is an 18th best 3.93 with a 1.21 WHIP, and a 15th best OPS of .711 with a team average of .241.
They’re OK against right-handed pitchers with a 13th best OPS of .720 and a .240 team average. Mike Trout made an early exit from Tuesday night’s game with a groin injury and sat out last night’s game.
The Angels really need all hands on deck at a time like this, but this type of injury takes time to heal up – and it is a 162 game season.
Boston Red Sox Betting Preview
The Red Sox seem to like playing in California, as they’ve won six in a row in the Golden State – three each against the Athletics and Angels.
The hitting has rounded into regular season form, as Boston has an 7th best team OPS of .732 and are tied for second in team batting average at .259.
The pitching has done their part with an 8th best 3.61 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. They also have an 8th best OPS .725 against right-handed pitchers.
After a rough month of April, Nick Pivetta has pitched a lot better in May and June. In five of his last starts, he’s given up just one earned run or less – and three earned runs in the other two starts. He’s truly an “innings eater” who went at least 6.0 innings in six of his last seven outings.
Los Angeles Angels vs Boston Red Sox Prediction
It’s too easy to choose the Angels because “they’re due” or because the reigning MVP is starting. And I know the Halos have been close the last couple of games. This game is a coin flip when it comes to sides, and I don’t have a good feel for the total.
So I’ll take the trends that are the most friendly: The Angels hitters that strikeout a lot (530 this season, 3rd most in MLB) plus a pretty good strikeout pitcher in Pivetta. That’s why I’ll lean to the Red Sox righty to get over 5.5 strikeouts.
Prediction:. Nick Pivetta Over 5.5 strikeouts
