Los Angeles Angels vs Chicago White Sox Analysis
The Chicago White Sox travel to southern California to take on the Los Angeles Angels in the first of a three game series. In a matchup of marquee names who haven’t pitched up to their potential, Lucas Giolito takes the bump against Noah Syndergaard.
The Halos are a -134 home favorite, the White Sox a +124 road dog and the run total is 8.5. Chicago comes off a weekend series with Baltimore where they lost three of four, and the Angels lost two of three to the Mariners at home.
Chicago White Sox Betting Preview
Not too long ago, starter Lucas Giollito was considered one of the best pitchers in MLB. But this year has been a disaster for the right-hander. In 12 starts, he’s compiled a 4-4 record, a 5.40 ERA, a 1.56 WHIP with 76 strikeouts and 63.1 innings.
In his last three starts and 15.0 innings, he went 0-2 with an 11.40 ERA, a 2.07 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts, and gave up five home runs.
While his strikeout stuff is still very good., his control has been suspect. In four of his past five starts he’s given up seven or more hits, and 26 walks on the season.
Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview
The Angels are 35-40, good for 3rd place in the AL West, 11.5 games behind Houston. They’re 5-5 in their last 10 games, and 19-22 at home. The team got off to a great start to the season at 27-17, but the wheels have fallen off since then as they’ve gone 8-23.
Replacing Joe Madden with Phil Nevin has helped stop the bleeding, but the team has still struggled – even with two of the best players in baseball, Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani.
The Angels are middle of the pack when it comes to hitting with a 16th best OPS, but they swing and miss way too often as LA has the most team strikeouts in MLB with 709.
Noah Syndergaard isn’t the dominating pitcher he used to be, but has been OK. In 11 starts and 58.1 innings, he’s 4-6 with a 3.86 ERA, 40 strikeouts and a 1.20 WHIP. His control has been pretty good, only giving up six home runs and 15 walks for the year.
Los Angeles Angels vs Chicago White Sox Prediction
While neither team is playing great baseball, the White Sox have more drama with their team than the Angels. Tony LaRussa’s days as Chicago’s manager appear to be numbered, and Giolito has been brutal in his last three starts.
Thor isn’t the pitcher he used to be, but based on current form I give him the edge over the White Sox starter. The Angels are also playing at home, that’s why I’ll lean to them on the moneyline.
Prediction: Los Angeles Angels Moneyline -134
