Los Angeles Angels vs New York Yankees Analysis
The Los Angeles Angels host the New York Yankees in the rubber match of their three game series. The Halos took game one 4-3, and the Bronx Bombers evened things up Tuesday night 7-4.
It’s a good pitching matchup with Gerritt Cole taking the mound against Patrick Sandoval. First pitch is scheduled for 9:38 PM EDT in Angels Stadium.
Can Cole Keep Consistency?
Gerritt Cole has been the Yankees ace and workhorse this season. In 26 starts and 157.2 innings, he’s put up a 3.31 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP and struck out 200 hitters. That comes to an average of six innings per start, and 1.3 Ks per frame.
He’s allowed 39 walks and 22 home runs at a rate of 2.23 free passes and 1.26 long flies per nine innings. As Larry David would say: “That’s pret-ty… pret-ty good.”
However, Cole does have a tendency every once in a while to give up home runs early in games. Three of his four starts that he’s given up multiple bombs have been on the road, and he’s only allowed one long fly in his last four starts. From a statistical standpoint, it looks like he could be due for a home run eruption.
Aaron Judge continues to have a career year as he launched his 51st bomb last night. He’s the Yankees most complete player in the field, as he can hit for power and average, can steal bases and plays solid defense. Mr. Judge has earned my respect for his play, and will contend for the AL MVP this season. And oh yeah, he’s gonna get paid a lot of money after this year.
Sandoval Underrated For Angels
The 2022 season for the Los Angeles Angels is like the movie Groundhog Day. Another year they have a great lineup on paper, but just can’t seem to stay healthy and/or play well enough to get to the postseason.
The good news for the Halos is that both Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani are healthy and back in the lineup. And that’s bad news for opposing pitchers who can be prone to give up home runs – like Gerritt Cole.
Although it hasn’t been a great year for this team, they’ve won four of their last five games – sweeping three from the Blue Jays last weekend, plus the two-game split with New York. Teams like the Angels can be dangerous this time of year because they’re playing loose, and literally have nothing to lose.
Next to Ohtani, Patrick Sandoval has been the Angels next best starting pitcher. In 21 starts and 115.0 innings, he’s posted a 4-9 record with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP with 120 strikeouts. He averages just over 5.0 innings per start, but has been pretty solid – giving up three earned runs or less in 17 of his 21 starts.
The Halos’ southpaw has walked 50 hitters, which comes to about four free passes per nine innings – which is higher than you’d like to see. However, he’s only allowed six home runs, which comes to 0.5 bombs per nine innings. This will be his first start against the Yankees in 2022, which gives Sandoval an edge even though New York is 3rd in team OPS against southpaws this year.
Los Angeles Angels vs New York Yankees Prediction
Both pitchers are in good current form, as Cole struck out 11 in his last start versus Toronto, and Sandoval has kept home runs to a minimum all year. That’s really important going against a power-hitting team like New York.
I think the Angels southpaw can navigate this Bomber lineup twice with minimal damage, and Cole could be due to give up another home run or two. That’s why I’ll take the Angels on the 1st 5 innings run line.
Prediction: Angels 1st 5 Innings Run Line (+0.5)
