Los Angeles Angels vs Oakland Athletics Analysis

The Los Angeles Angels host the Oakland Athletics Tuesday night in the first of a three game set. The Halos dropped three of four to the Rangers at home last weekend, while the A’s dropped two of three to the White Sox in Chicago.

Southpaw Cole Irvin gets the start against right-hander Noah Syndergaard, first pitch is scheduled for 9:38 PM EDT / 6:38 PDT.

Cole Cruising For Athletics

The A’s are enduring one of their worst seasons in recent memory with a 39-65 record, last in the American League West. The front office traded off most of their best players before the season started, so it’s not a great surprise that this team is this bad.

One of the bright spots on this roster is southpaw Cole Irvin, who’s been the A’s best starting pitcher this season. In 18 starts and 109.1 innings, he’s 6-7 with a 3.05 ERA, an impressive 1.04 WHIP and struck out 74.

He hasn’t made many mistakes, as he’s surrendered just 12 home runs and 21 walks. His advanced analytics on Baseball Savant aren’t that impressive, but Irvin has gotten the job done with only three starts where he’s given up four earned runs or more.

Oakland also has a better record away from RingCentral Coliseum (22-32) than they do at home (17-33). Their hitting hasn’t been great with a second-worst overall OPS of .621, the lowest team batting average of .215 and second-lowest OPS versus righties at .614.

Syndergaard Sizing Up Competition

2022 for the Los Angeles Angels is another year of what could have been, if they could have stayed healthy and their free agent signings would have panned out.

Mike Trout has been diagnosed with a back injury, and the team doesn’t know when he’ll return to the lineup. Because they’re out of the playoff picture, it’s doubtful he’ll play much the rest of this season.

Starter Noah Syndergaard has done a pretty good job for the Angels this season. in 15 starts and 80.0 innings, he’s put up a 3.83 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP and 64 strikeouts. Thor has also avoided a lot of mistakes, as he’s allowed just 22 walks and nine home runs year-to-date.

The Halos don’t profile well against left-handed pitchers, as they’re 28th in OPS at .638 with a .222 team batting average, and they have the dubious honor of being the highest strikeout team in baseball with 985.

This doesn’t bode well for a struggling Angels club going against one of the league’s best southpaws, and a team that’s probably glad to be anywhere but Oakland right now.

Los Angeles Angels vs Oakland Athletics Prediction

This is a somewhat difficult handicap because neither of these teams have a great offense. Syndergaard isn’t the pitcher he used to be, and I think Irvin’s the better starter in this matchup.

Both teams’ bullpens are in the bottom 10 for ERA, so either one of these pens could blow up and give up a lead. That’s why I’ll take the A’s on the 1st 5 innings moneyline.

Prediction: Oakland 1st 5 innings Moneyline
