Los Angeles Angels vs Seattle Mariners Analysis
The Los Angeles Angels host the Seattle Mariners in the first of a three game set. The M’s dropped two of three games from Texas in Arlington last weekend, while the Halos took two of three at home from the Twins.
It’ll be a marquee pitching matchup as Luis Castillo goes against Shohei Ohtani, first pitch in Anaheim is scheduled for 9:38 PM EDT.
Seattle currently has the second wild card spot, 1/2 game ahead of Tampa Bay at 62-52, while the Angels are 51-64 and 10.0 games behind the Rays for the last wild card berth.
Mariners Cashing In With Castillo
Luis Castillo was a great pickup for the Mariners before the trade deadline. He gives them an excellent right-handed arm to compliment southpaw Robbie Ray, and he’s been consistent most of the year. In 16 starts he’s given up three earned runs or less in all but one outing.
The former Red hasn’t been overworked this season, either, with just 99.2 innings of work in 2022. He has a 5-4 record with a 2.71 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP, with 105 strikeouts and averages more than 6.0 innings per start.
The Mariners will need their pitching to be on point to win games, as their hitting hasn’t been the most consistent in 2022. They have a 20th best team OPS and 25th highest batting average of just .231, but are middle of the pack in home runs at 14th.
Ohtani Needs Help!
For all the Angels’ woes this season, you can’t blame them on Shohei Ohtani as he’s played at an MVP level both at the plate and on the mound. In 19 starts he’s 10-7 with a 2.68 ERA and 1.05 WHIP and 157 strikeouts – that’s 1.41 Ks per inning – and an opposing batting average of .214.
The Halos’ pitching has been better than average in August, but the hitting has gone south. LA is 26th in team OPS and 27th in team batting average, and 1st in strikeouts at the plate. The front office and field manager will have to address the hitting and poor plate discipline if they want to improve and compete in 2023.
Los Angeles Angels vs Seattle Mariners Prediction
This is one of the best pitching matchups of the year and should be a great game to watch if you’re a baseball purist. I think this is a “get up” spot for both starters as they want to out duel the other, and I don’t expect a lot of scoring – especially through the middle innings.
The Angels’ bullpen hasn’t been the most reliable this year, and with a low full game total of 6.5 I’m not sure I can trust them to help keep it under. That’s why I’ll take the 1st 5 innings under 3.5 total runs scored.
Prediction: 1st 5 Innings Under 3.5 Total Runs Scored
