Los Angeles Angels vs Seattle Mariners Analysis

The Los Angeles Angels host the Seattle Mariners in the second of a three game series. Last night the visitors took game one 6-2, and the home team hopes to even things up. Robbie Ray takes the hill for the M’s and Jose Suarez gets the nod for the Halos.

The Angels bullpen imploded again last night, giving up four runs in the top of the ninth to give Seattle the win. Relief pitching, low batting average and too many strikeouts at the plate are the big reasons for their mediocre performance this year.

Ray Rounding Into Form

When the Mariners signed Robbie Ray to a $115 million contract, they expected him to pitch like one of the best hurlers in the American League.

After a shaky start to the season, he’s rounded into that top starting pitcher form, and Seattle should be happy with their investment. The southpaw has posted a 3.90 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP in 23 starts and 136 innings, with 156 strikeouts.

After the All-Star break he faced Houston in consecutive starts, and struggled in both of them. No shame in that game, many pitchers haven’t had success against the Astros this year, but in his last two starts against the Angels and Yankees, he’s gone at least 6.0 innings and given up three earned runs or less.

A big reason for the Mariners mid-season success is Ray’s improvement on the hill, and the emergence of rookie outfielder Julio Rodriguez.

He’s currently the odds-on favorite for AL Rookie of the Year at -600. “J-Rod” has played great defense, provided timely hitting for power and average, and given this team a much-needed boost of energy and enthusiasm.

Angels Want More From Suarez

Jose Suarez doesn’t have great season-long numbers, but he has pitched well in his two starts against Seattle. On the year he has a 4.04 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP with 61 strikeouts in 62 innings and 12 starts. Against the Mariners on June 18 and 25, he went a combined 10.1 innings, allowed 9 hits, one earned run, three walks and struck out 15.

The southpaw hasn’t been what you’d called an “innings eater” or goes deep into games, but he has thrown more frames lately in his last two starts against Oakland, going 5.0 and 7.0 innings, respectively.

Suarez hasn’t pitched as much – or as well – at Angels Stadium, with a 4.76 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in five starts and six appearances, compared to eight appearances and seven starts on the road with a 3.44 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.

Los Angeles Angels vs Seattle Mariners Prediction

The Mariners have the advantage in starting pitching and the bullpen. Although we know that bullpens are like overly ripe fruit: You never know when they’ll go bad.

Seattle is 13th in OPS versus lefties the last 30 days, while the Angels are 27th in the same category. That’s why I’ll take the visiting team on the run line.

Prediction: Seattle Mariners Run Line (-1.5)
