Los Angeles Dodgers vs Colorado Rockies Analysis
The Los Angeles Dodgers host the Colorado Rockies in the fourth of their six-game series. Big Blue has taken two of the first three games, as the Rox got their first series win on Sunday by a count of 4 to 1.
The starting pitchers are Jose Urena and Tony Gonsolin, first pitch in Dodger Stadium is set for 10:10 PM EDT / 7:10 PDT.
Cron Looks To Notch 30 Home Runs
Like many pitchers who play half their games at Coors Field, Jose Urena has struggled this season. In 20 games and 16 starts, he’s posted a 3-8 record, a 5.24 ERA plus a 1.62 WHIP.
The veteran right-hander hasn’t been able to miss enough bats, as the opposition has hit .293 this season – and he’s only struck out 59 batters in 91 innings. That’s not the ratio you want to see for a major league starting pitcher.
When you think of the Rockies, you think of home runs and a lot of scoring. Their scoring as a team has been average – just 15th in MLB at 4.34 runs a game – and they haven’t had the home run power in the lineup other than C.J. Cron.
The first baseman has 29 big flies for the year, and only four other teammates have 10 or more. As a team they’re just 23rd in home runs – not what you’d expect from a team that plays half its games in Coors Field.
The Rockies will need to make some major changes and tough decisions next year to upgrade its lineup. But when you look at the history of the Monfort brothers, they probably won’t.
Colorado tends to rely on young prospects and/or veterans that are a few years past their prime in order to save money. While they’ve publicly talked about changing the culture and the team, I don’t expect a lot of big changes at the corner of 20th and Blake next season.
Gonsolin Proving Value in Dodgers Rotation
The Dodgers are who we thought they were – one of (if not the best) teams in baseball. Their pitching staff and lineups are #1 in team ERA and OPS, #2 in bullpen ERA and 9th best in stolen bases.
Tony Gonsolin has been a very pleasant surprise for LA this season. With Walker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw missing time due to injuries, he did really well in their absences. Goose has posted a 16-1 record with a 2.10 ERA and a sterling 0.86 WHIP, and averaged almost 6.0 innings per outing in 23 starts and 128.1 innings.
There were doubts from some baseball analysts as to whether he could sustain this level of performance throughout the year. But Gonsolin has proved them wrong with one of the lowest ERAs of any pitcher in the National League and MLB.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Colorado Rockies Prediction
It’s a starting pitching and lineup mismatch as Gonsolin is the much better pitcher, and the Dodgers have a superior lineup. That’s why I’ll take the Dodgers on the -1.5 run line, and sprinkle some on the -2 alternate line.
Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers Run Line (-1.5)
