Los Angeles Dodgers vs Milwaukee Brewers Analysis
The Los Angeles Dodgers host the Milwaukee Brewers in the rubber match of a three game set. The Brew Crew took game one, and Big Blue won game two. Tonight it’ll be Adrian Houser going against Andrew Heaney. First pitch at Dodger Stadium is set for 10:10 PM EDT.
Milwaukee is 1.5 games behind the Padres for the last wild card berth, and the Dodgers have the best record in the National league.
Houser Back From Injury
Adrian Houser hasn’t had a great year for the Brewers. In 15 starts, he has a 5-8 record with a 4.72 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. The right-hander has allowed 31 walks and eight home runs in 76.1 innings and he faces a Dodgers team with the best OPS versus right-handed pitching.
It seems he likes pitching in odd years, as 2019 and 2021 were solid seasons for Houser with sub-4.00 ERAs. However, 2020 and 2022 haven’t been as good with 5.30 and high 4 ERAs. 2019 was his best strikeout year with 117 Ks in 111.1 innings, but otherwise he hasn’t overpowered hitters. This will be Houser’s first game back from the IL with an elbow injury, and he’ll probably be on a pitch count.
The Brewers may not be the best hitting team for average in MLB, but they can mash the long ball. They’re 11th in OPS, 23rd in team average and 3rd in home runs. Their biggest weakness has been inconsistent hitting, which showed up earlier this year.
Dodgers Locked in For October
Andrew Heaney hasn’t pitched much this year for the Dodgers, but when he has, he’s pitched well. In eight games and 35 innings he has a 1-1 record, 1.77 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP – plus an impressive 52 strikeouts, which comes to about 1.5 Ks per inning.
Based on his career numbers, it looks like he’s due for some negative regression. Heaney has a 33-39 record with a 4.57 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP; but he’s always had good strikeout numbers with 702 in 670 innings of work.
While he’s not one of the Dodgers’ better starting pitchers based on his numbers, he’ll still be valuable for LA down the regular season stretch.
With LA having a first-round playoff bye virtually locked up, the main goal for this team is to stay healthy for October. If he can go four to five innings per game giving up only one or two runs, manager Dave Roberts will probably be satisfied with that.
Heaney’s last start was against the Brewers in Milwaukee on August 18th, and was a mixed bag of stats. He went 4.2 innings, gave up five runs (three earned), five hits, three home runs and a walk – with 10 strikeouts.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Milwaukee Brewers Prediction
The Dodgers are heavy favorites on the moneyline at -245, which reflects more on how bad Adrian Houser is and the Brewers’ hitting has been in recent games. The Brew Crew strikes out quite a bit versus left-handed pitching and tonight they’re facing a southpaw in Heaney.
I think the Dodgers’ lefty can avoid hard contact two times through the Milwaukee lineup enough to get this game to the bullpen.
LA is the best in MLB in OPS versus right-handed pitching, and they face a bad righty who’s coming off the IL. The Dodgers should score Chicago-style, early and often. That’s why I like Big Blue the 1st 5 innings team total. over 2.5 runs scored.
Prediction: Dodgers 1st 5 Innings Team Total Over 2.5 Runs Scored
