Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres Analysis
The San Diego Padres travel to Chavez Ravine to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first of a four game series.
The Friars split a two game series against the D-Backs in Arizona, while the Dodgers lost their series to the Rockies in Coors Field. It’s a right-handed pitching matchup with Joe Musgrove taking the bump against Mitch White.
LA is one game ahead of San Diego in the NL West as we’re almost to the halfway mark of the season. The Padres are a +115 underdog, the Dodgers are a -130 favorite and the run total is set at 8.
San Diego Padres Betting Preview
Java Joe is coming off his worst start of the season, but still has great numbers. In 13 starts and 85.0 innings, Musgrove has a 2.12 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP and 82 strikeouts.
His last start on June 23rd at home versus the Phillies he went 6.0 innings, gave up seven hits, six earned runs and two home runs with just one strikeout. However, every one of the 12 outings before the last one was a quality start where he went at least six innings and gave up three earned runs or less.
Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Preview
Mitch White isn’t exactly a marquee name among Dodger pitchers, and has had to fill in due to Walker Buehler being sidelined with an injury. He’s more of an opener than a traditional starter, although he has gone 5.0 innings in two of his five starts.
In 29.0 innings he has a 4.25 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP with 30 strikeouts. and I really like these last two numbers – a fairly low WHIP and a strikeout rate of one per inning.
Freddie Freeman and Max Muncy have had some success at the plate against Musgrove. They’ve hit .400 and .467 respectively in 15 at-bats, each with a home run.
The Dodgers are coming off a three game series in Colorado and they only hit well in last night’s 8-4 win. Freddie Freeman was the exception, as he’s on a 13-game hitting streak.
While the “Coors Field hangover” – the letdown in the first game after playing in Coors Field – hasn’t been as bad for teams this year as prior seasons, LA hasn’t hit that well as of late. And they’re facing one of the best pitchers in baseball in Musgrove.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres Prediction
Java Joe is coming off his worst start of the year against the Phillies, and a veteran like Musgrove should make the needed adjustments to get back on track.
So I see this as a bounce-back start versus the Dodgers. Mitch White is an underrated pitcher for LA, and I expect him to be up for this game and pitch well.
I think both teams will be ready for tonight and we should see a close, low-scoring game. I’ll take the 1st 5 innings under total runs scored.
Prediction: 1st 5 Innings Under Total Runs Scored
