Los Angeles Dodgers vs Washington Nationals Analysis
The Washington Nationals finish a three game set in Chavez Ravine versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. Believe it or not, the Nationals won the first two games of this series and are looking for a rare road sweep.
It’s a battle of southpaws as Patrick Corbin takes the bump for the Nationals, and Andrew Heaney (just off the IL) takes the ball for the Dodgers. First pitch is scheduled for 3:10 Eastern / 12:10 Pacific Time.
Soto Saying Goodbye to Nationals Soon?
There’s not a lot of great things to say about Patrick Corbin, except that he’s a left-handed pitcher in the major leagues.
He has a 6.02 ERA with a Snoop Dogg-high 1.70 WHIP in 20 starts and 104.2 innings with 98 strikeouts, and a .333 opposing batting average. The veteran southpaw has had a handful of good starts this year, mainly against the Marlins, Rockies and Mets.
The Nationals – outside of Juan Soto and Josh Bell – haven’t been a great hitting team this year. But that hasn’t been the case the first two games of this series, as Washington plated a combined 12 runs.
It looks like these could be the last days of Soto in a Nationals uniform, and his teammates seem to be stepping up their games.
Dodgers Excited to Have Heaney Back
The Dodgers don’t hit lefties quite as well as righties, but they still do alright with the 8th best OPS in the majors. That’s why the recent power outage – scoring just four combined runs the last two games – isn’t very Dodger-like.
In Tuesday night’s game they left 17 runners on base, and that number should go down quite a bit in Wednesday afternoon’s finale. Justin Turner has hit Corbin really well over his career, at a .395 clip over 38 at-bats with two home runs and seven RBI.
Veteran southpaw Andrew Heaney’s return to the starting rotation is very welcome for the Dodgers. Their starting rotation has been hit hard by injuries, especially to Walker Buehler, and shoulder inflammation has kept Heaney off the mound for most of this season.
He’s had three starts in 15 innings this year with a 0.59 ERA, and if he can stay healthy, should be able to “eat innings” the second half of the season. And Dave Roberts probably wants him to go at least five or six innings after the bullpen’s collapse on Tuesday night.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Washington Nationals Prediction
Big Blue may have gotten a little ‘fat and sassy’ or overconfident after their 4-game sweep of the Giants. But two straight multiple-run losses to one of the worst teams in MLB should have brought them firmly down to earth.
Injuries have kept Heaney off the diamond for most of the season, but when he has taken the bump, he’s performed well for LA.
The Dodgers are a much better team on the mound and at the plate, and on paper they should win this game but games aren’t played on paper.
Teams that go into even a small slump can take a little time to get back to top form. I don’t trust them enough to take them on the run line, but I like the Dodgers over team total runs scored.
