Mariners vs Astros Analysis
The Houston Astros travel to Safeco Field to play the Seattle Mariners Friday night for their home opener. Veteran right-hander Jake Odorizzi faces off against southpaw Marco Gonzales.
Odorizzi Brings Veteran Presence
The Astros start the year 4-2 and are on their third straight road series to start the season. The pitching has been on point, as Houston’s staff has the lowest ERA in the majors at 1.69.
They’ve struggled at the plate with a 19th-best OPS of .692, but that’s not uncommon this season for most teams across MLB with the shorter spring training. Odorizzi gets the start in his 11th year in the majors, and has solid career regular season numbers with a 3.95 ERA and 1.24 WHIP.
Injuries for the Astros: Yordan Alvarez is questionable for this game, while Taylor Jones, Lance McCullers Jr. and Jake Meyers are out.
Mariners Making Most of Strong Pitching Start
Seattle has started the year 3-4, winning the first two games against the Twins, losing two apiece to the Twins and White Sox, and salvaging the series finale in Chicago.
The Mariners are struggling at the plate with a 23rd best OPS of .630 and 3rd worst team batting average of .192. Pitching stats are better as they sport an 11th-best team ERA of 3.51 and an impressive WHIP of 1.15.
Starter Marco Gonzales got rocked in his first outing against the Twins, giving up six runs (two earned), six hits and three home runs in just two innings of work.
While his defense didn’t do him any favors, the three long balls aren’t what a manager or pitching coach wants to see in an opening start. However, the left-hander does have decent career stats, with an ERA of 4.08 and a WHIP of 1.27.
Injuries for the Mariners: Casey Sadler, Evan White, Ken Giles, Kyle Lewis and Sergio Romo are out.
Mariners vs Astros Prediction
Betting Recommendation:. Houston comes into this series playing good baseball with an off day Thursday, and the Mariners played at the White Sox Thursday afternoon before traveling back to Seattle.
Gonzales got rocked in his opening start, and I think the Astros should be able to produce some hits and runs.
Odorizzi is a decent starting pitcher, but has pitched more to contact later in his career and only struck out two in his opening start. The Mariners should be able to make some noise at the plate. That’s why I like the over 8 runs for the full game.
Prediction: Over 8
