Mariners vs Rangers Analysis

The Texas Rangers meet the Seattle Mariners in T-Mobile Park for the first of a three-game series, with right-hander Jon Gray going against left-hander Robbie Ray.

The Rangers are off to a shaky start this season with a 2-7 record. Texas can score runs in bunches, but the pitching and defense are a problem in Arlington.

Rangers Look to Improve Lowly Pitching

Their off-season moves were a mixed bag, as they signed former Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager – who’s been a great addition to the team – but also signed former Rockies starter Jon Gray to be the staff ace.

Gray had better numbers at Coors Field versus on the road, where pitchers should (at least in theory) pitch better. He’s also been a good strikeout pitcher throughout his career, averaging one K per inning.

Those numbers should improve pitching away from Coors Field, which is a positive for the veteran right-hander.

Maybe the strikeout numbers were the reason the Rangers signed him, and/or he was more affordable than other free agent pitchers… and/or there weren’t any better available pitchers on the market.

Gray was a decent, reliable starting pitcher in Colorado. But if he’s your #1, your rotation has some problems. And that’s exactly where this team finds itself to start the season.

On the brighter side, Texas can hit and hit well, especially against left-handed pitchers like Seattle’s starter, Robbie Ray. The Rangers have a .954 team OPS against lefties, which is pretty, pretty… pretty good, as Larry David would say.

Ray Still Getting Comfortable With the Mariners

For the Mariners, it looks like their bats finally woke up, scoring 18 runs in last weekend’s three-game set at home with the Astros. That’s impressive because it was against one of the top 10 pitching staffs in baseball, and early in the year at one of the most hitter un-friendly ballparks in MLB.

Ray is coming off an excellent season with Toronto, with a 2.84 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 193.2 innings. But in 2022, the southpaw regressed to a 4.73 ERA and 1.41 WHIP, and gave up four home runs in 13.1 innings of work.

Not the kind of stats you want before facing a hot-hitting team like Texas. The good news for Seattle is that the rest of the pitching staff has performed well, with a 6th-best team ERA of 3.14 and a very good 1.10 WHIP.

Mariners vs Rangers Prediction

Although Ray is considered the Mariner’s staff ace, his shaky first two starts make me nervous. The Rangers have crushed left-handed pitching to begin the season and should be able to get a few runs off the Seattle starter.

The Mariners’ hitters seem to have found their groove, and the Rangers bullpen has been a dumpster fire so far in 2022. The total seems a bit low and I see value here. That’s why I’ll take the over 7.5 runs total.

Prediction: Over 7.5 Runs Total
