Mariners vs Rangers Analysis
The Texas Rangers are at the Seattle Mariners and T-Mobile Park for the second of a three-game series. Dane Dunning gets the start against right-hander Logan Gilbert.
Dunning Accumulating K’s But Inconsistent
Texas got off to a slow start as they lost the first game of the series 6-2 with the Mariners’ Robbie Ray starting. It doesn’t get any easier tonight as they face a really good up-and-coming pitcher in Gilbert, considered by Chris Crawford of NBC Sports to have top-30 pitcher potential. And playing in the 2nd-best pitcher’s park in baseball.
Eli White and Marcus Semien were the bright spots for the Texas offense. White went 1-for-1 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base, while the Ranger’s shortstop went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Starting Dane Dunning has got off to a rocky start to the season. In two starts, he’s compiled an ERA of 5.19 in 8.2 innings of work with a 1.73 WHIP, giving up 11 hits and striking out 11.
He is a good strikeout pitcher, with a career average of one punch-out per inning. However, Dunning has a 56% hard-hit pitch rate the first two games of the year.
He’ll have to improve on this rate (along with the bloated WHIP) to be effective in the Rangers rotation. The pitcher-friendly confines of T-Mobile Park should help the Texas starter, but may not be enough to out-perform Logan Gilbert.
Gilbert Looks to Gouge Rangers
Seattle’s offense continued to produce, scoring six against the staff with the highest ERA in the majors. The M’s got to starter Jon Gray early, scoring four runs in the first two innings. And Abraham Toro gored Texas reliever Spencer Patton for a 7th-inning, two-run bomb that put the game away for the Mariners.
Mariner’s starter Logan Gilbert’s first two outings have gone really well. The right-hander has thrown 10 innings with 11 strikeouts, a 0.90 ERA and 0.80 WHIP. The right-hander relies mainly on a four-seam fastball and slider, and will mix in an occasional change-up or curve ball.
Mariners vs Rangers Prediction
This should be a fairly low-scoring game, and the run total of 8 seems just about right. I lean towards Seattle for the full game, but you never know when good bullpens could have an occasional bad outing.
I see a definite edge between the starting pitchers and a slightly better price on the first 5 innings versus full game for the Mariners. That’s why I’ll take Seattle 1st 5 innings on the moneyline.
Prediction: Seattle Mariners first 5 innings Moneyline
