Mariners vs Rangers Analysis

The Texas Rangers are at the Seattle Mariners to try and salvage the last of a three-game series. Taylor Hearn takes the bump against Marco Gonzales.

High Pressure For Great Performance by Hearn

Texas bats have been fairly quiet the last two games in the Emerald City only scoring four runs in the first two games, so they look to be due for some positive regression.

Taylor Hearn has shown some flashes of brilliance to start the 2022 season. He’s cool under pressure and has shown the ability to work himself out of jams.

Hearn has a fairly high K rate at over 25%, low walk rate at 5%, but gives up a lot more hits than we’d like to see from a major league starter. But he has struck out more than a hitter per inning, and hasn’t given up a home run in the first two games of the season.

While Rangers bats started the year hot, they’ve cooled down over the last several games as they’re now 18th in team OPS at .653. However, they’re still in the top 5 in baseball in team OPS against left-handed pitching, and they face a left-handed starter in Gonzales today.

Mariners Making Most of Limited Offense

The Mariners hitting has shown significant improvement this past week, and now find themselves in the top half of major league baseball with a team OPS of .698.

Abraham Toro has hit well the last two games to overcome an ice cold start to 2022. His average is still below the Mendoza line at .179, but has a respectable OPS of .626.

The Mariners third-baseman went 2-for-2 Wednesday night with two walks, which means he’s seeing the ball really well and is a “buy” sign if you’re playing daily fantasy or looking at Toro prop bets.

Adam Frazier went 3-for-4 with a walk and Ty France went 2-for-4 last night. Toro, Frazier and France have powered the Mariners attack the last two games, with little to no help from the rest of the lineup.

Mariners vs Rangers Prediction

Looking at the two starters, it’s difficult to give either Hearn or Gonzales a significant edge this early in the season. And Rangers hitters should be seeing the ball better after two games in Seattle. And they’re due for some positive regression.

While I still can’t trust the Rangers bullpen, I think Taylor Hearn can keep Texas competitive in the first half of this game in a more pitcher-friendly yard like T-Mobile Park. That’s why I like Texas on the 1st 5 innings run line.

Prediction: Texas Rangers 1st 5 Innings Run Line
