Minnesota Twins vs Boston Red Sox Analysis
The Boston Red Sox face the Minnesota Twins in the second of three games from Target Field on Tuesday evening. The Twins doubled up Boston 4-2 last night, with a three run barrage in the 5th inning.
The Red Sox currently sit five games under .500 at 62-67 with playoff hopes dwindling. Minnesota is now only 1.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central with a 66-61 record.
Boston starts another rookie in righty Kutter Crawford, while the Twins counter with the veteran Chris Archer. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 PM EST/4:40 PST.
Red Sox Disappoint Again
The Boston Red Sox woes continued as they lost 4-2 despite outhitting the Twins 10-7. Trevor Story went 3 for 3 with a walk and run scored. Boston could have won the game with literally a clutch hit or two as they went 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position while leaving nine runners on base.
Rookie starter Brayan Bello suffered his fourth loss of after giving up three runs on five hits in 4+ innings of work. The Boston Red Sox occupy dead last place in the American League East with a payroll that dwarfs teams like the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles.
The post-season seems out of reach as this point, with eight games separating them from a Wild Card spot. The Red Sox potent offensive attack has dipped in the rankings as they are now outside of the top ten at 11th in runs scored and 12th in OPS.
The rookie righty Kutter Crawford will be on the bump for Boston on Tuesday night. He is 3-5 on the season with a bloated 5.30 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. Crawford has really struggled in his last two outings as he allowed a combined 13 runs on 21 hits across only 8.1 innings of work.
Streaky Twins Stay Hot
The Minnesota Twins continue to be one of the most streaky teams in baseball. Over their last 14 games they have made a four game winning streak sandwich with a six game losing streak as the filing.
They doubled up the Boston Red Sox 4-2 last night behind 4.2 two run innings from Dylan Bundy and 4.1 scoreless innings from the bullpen. Gio Urshela had the deciding blow with a three run double. The Twins are now only 1.5 behind the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central and 3 games behind in the Wild Card race.
The Minnesota offense hovers around top ten in the rankings as they sit at 10th in OPS and 15th in runs scored. The veteran journeyman Chris Archer will take his turn in the rotation for Minnesota.
He is 2-7 with a 4.34 ERA and 1.30 WHIP on the season. Archer doesn’t have much in the way of longevity as he is basically a five inning pitcher. He has allowed six earned runs on eleven hits across nine innings of work.
Minnesota Twins vs Boston Red Sox Prediction
The Minnesota Twins are light favorites with a money line set at -130, while the Boston Red Sox sit at +110 with a total of 9. This game has the potential for offensive fireworks as both teams are using starters who struggle with longevity, backed by bullpens with issues of their own.
Both teams have veteran lineups with the ability to stack runs and be a top ten units. Kutter Crawford rarely makes it past five innings, including only lasting for 1.2 innings against Minnesota back in April.
Crawford is backed by a horrendous bullpen that ranks second to last in ERA over the last 30 days. The Twins will also need extensive bullpen work as Chris Archer is on regular innings maintenance.
Their bullpen is better than Bostons, but has allowed the second most homeruns in the league. This doesn’t bode well against a Red Sox lineup loaded with powerful sluggers. We should plenty of runs in this one, take the over 9 runs.
Prediction: Over 9 Total Runs -105
