Minnesota Twins vs Detroit Tigers Analysis
The Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins play the rubber match of a three game series from Target Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers evened the series with a three run 7th inning rally that resulted in a 5-3 victory. The Twins will look to keep the lead in the head-to-head season series as they currently lead 7-6.
Detroit will turn to the southpaw Tyler Alexander, while Minnesota sends the righty Joe Ryan to the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM EST/10:10 PST.
Twins Make Moves To Improve
The new look Minnesota Twins hope to bounce back from last night’s 5-3 loss. Starter Chris Archer only lasted 4.1 innings while allowing two runs and striking out eight.
Griffin Jax was the pitcher of record as he gave up three earned runs in only a third of an inning. Jake Cave went 2 for 3 with a double and Mark Contreras hit a solo blast.
Minnesota made some noise at the deadline as they added starter Tyler Mahle, closer Jorge Lopez, reliever Michael Fulmer and catcher Sandy Leon. The Twins are looking to make a playoff run as they currently lead the American League Central by one game over the Cleveland Guardians.
They have a potent offensive attack as they rank 5th in OPS and 12th in runs scored. Joe Ryan takes the mound for Minnesota in the midst of a solid campaign. He is 7-4 on the season with a 3.78 ERA.
However he was absolutely hammered last time out with 10 runs allowed in 4.2 innings, including a staggering five homeruns. Ryan has thrived against the lifeless Tigers lineup this season, going 2-0 with only one run allowed across 12.2 innings of work.
Toothless Tigers
The Detroit Tigers have been downright pathetic at the plate this season as they rank dead last in runs scored and OPS. However they did come out on top with a 5-3 win over the division leading Minnesota Twins last night.
Rookie outfielder Riley Greene went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI from the leadoff spot. Matt Manning held the Twins to three runs across five innings of work.
With a 42-63 record the Tigers were obviously sellers at the deadline, parting ways with reliever Michael Fulmer and outfielder Robbie Grossman.
Tyler Alexander will serve as the opener for Detroit as he hasn’t pitched past the 4th inning since early April. Advanced metrics say regression is due as he has an ERA of 4.10 and an xERA of 4.97. He did throw three scoreless innings against this Twins team just last month.
Minnesota Twins vs Detroit Tigers Prediction
The Minnesota Twins are heavy favorites with a money line set at -210, while the Detroit Tigers sit at +180 with a total of 8.5. The Twins obviously have the more potent offensive attack and they have crushed left handed pitching of late.
They rank 4th ISO and 8th in OPS against lefties in the last 30 days. Joe Ryan has been dominant against Detroit this season but his last start was concerning to say the least. The Tigers bullpen ranks 3rd in ERA and the Twins 13th, however they did add Fulmer.
Let’s focus on the mismatch with Twins bats against the southpaw Alexander and keep the pens out of it. Take the Minnesota team total over 2.5 in the first five innings.
Prediction: Minnesota Twins F5 (first five innings) Team Total Over 2.5 -105 DK
