Minnesota Twins vs Kansas City Royals Analysis
The Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins play the second game of a three game set from Target Field on Wednesday evening. The Twins doubled up the Royals 6-3 in the first game last night behind seven scoreless innings from Joe Ryan.
A couple of crafty righties go head-to-head as the 32 year-old Sonny Gray gets the nod for Minnesota while Kansas City counters with the 38 year-old Zack Greinke. First pitch is slated for 7:40 PM EST/4:40 PST.
Twins Let Central Slip Away
The Minnesota Twins led the American League Central for the better part of the season but have now slipped into third place after relinquishing the lead in mid-August. They currently sit five games behind the Cleveland Guardians and two games behind the Chicago White Sox in the division.
The Twins improved to exactly .500 at 70-70 after beating the Royals 6-3 yesterday. Joe Ryan pitched seven no-hit innings before being pulled with 106 pitches entering the 8th inning. Carlos Correa went 2 for 4 with three RBI while hitting his 20th longball of the season.
Leadoff man Luis Arraez went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Minnesota has been average on offense this season as they rank middle of the pack in runs scored, RBI, batting average and slugging percentage.
Sonny Gray will toe the rubber for the Twins on Wednesday night. He is 7-4 with a 3.09 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 108/34 K/BB ratio on the season. Gray gas faced the Royals twice this season and held them to only one run allowed across 12 innings of work.
Same Old Story For Royals
The Kansas City Royals record fell to 57-85 on the season after losing 6-3 last night. Kris Bubic was tagged for five earned runs on ten hits across only five innings of work. Bobby Witt Jr’s double was the teams only extra-base hit.
The Royals currently occupy second to last place in the American League Central, a spot they have become familiar with over recent years. The Kansas City offensive attack is bottom of barrel as they hover around bottom five in runs scored, OPS, homeruns and slugging percentage.
Zack Greinke will enter the game with a 4-8 record, 4.00 ERA and 1.34 WHIP on the season. He has faced the Twins three times this season and held them to seven runs across 15 innings of work. Greinke has struggled on the road with a 6.33 ERA compared to a home ERA of only 1.93.
Minnesota Twins vs Kansas City Royals Prediction
The Minnesota Twins enter this contest as heavy favorites with a money line set at -200 while the Kansas City Royals sit at +170 with a total of 7.5.
We already mentioned just how poorly Zack Greinke has pitched on the road. He not only has a bloated 6.33 ERA but a road OBA of .322. Conversely Sonny Gray has been sharp at home with a 2.97 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and .220 OBA across 12 home starts.
On top of that Gray has been absolutely dominant against Kansas City this season. The Twins also have something to play for as each and every game becomes more than the one prior.
Minnesota knows they need to take advantage of playing the Royals in an attempt to gain ground. We get some nice plus money on the Twins run line at +110.
Prediction: Minnesota Twins -1.5 +110
