Minnesota Twins vs Tampa Bay Rays Analysis
The Tampa Bay Rays travel to the Target Center in Minnesota to begin a three game weekend series against Twins on Friday night.
The Twins dropped the rubber game of a three series in 10-7 slugfest against the New York Yankees. The Rays swept a quality team in the St. Louis Cardinals as they snuck out of town with a 2-1 victory.
The hard throwing righty Drew Rasmussen takes the mound to be opposed by the young southpaw Devin Smeltzer. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 PM EST/5:10 PST.
Rays Roll Into Minnesota
The Tampa Bay Rays come into Minnesota after an impressive sweep over a top-notch team in the St. Louis Cardinals.
They won a 2-1 nail-bitter yesterday afternoon, upping their record to 34-23. Shane McClanahan was absolutely dominant while allowing only one unearned run in eight innings with nine strikeouts. Leadoff man Kevin Kiermaier went 2 for 3 and #3 hitter Ji-Man Choi hit a blast.
The Rays surpassed the Toronto Blue Jays for 2nd place in the American League East with the sweep. The Tampa offense doesn’t have outstanding numbers but they seem to always get the job done with clutch hits.
They rank 19th in runs scored, 22nd in OPSBand 17th in wRC+. Drew Rasmussen will begin this series as he continues his first full season as a starter. Rasmussen has is 5-2 with a 3.02 ERA and 1.02 WHIP across 53.2 innings. He boasts a 21.6% strikeout rate with only a 6.6% walk rate.
Twins Maintain Division Lead
The Minnesota Twins have played much better than expected this season as they occupy the top record in the American League Central with a 33-26 record.
Unfortunately they lost their last series after getting outslugged 10-7 against the New York Yankees. They Twins opened the game with back-to-back-to-back homeruns against Gerrit Cole and led 3-1 & 7-3 but it wasn’t enough.
Dylan Bundy didn’t fair much better than Cole as he allowed four runs on five hits in four innings. Byron Buxton hit two bombs with four RBI. The Twins offense has really come into form as newly acquired Carlos Correa has gotten healthy and started hitting.
With him Buxton and the additions of Gio Urshela and Gary Sanchez they rank 10th in runs, 8th in OPS and 4th in wRC+.
Lefty Devin Smeltzer gets the nod for Minnesota for his 6th start of the year. He has excellent results through five starts with a 1.93 ERA but his 3.78 FIP indicate that he is due for regression.
Minnesota Twins vs Tampa Bay Rays Prediction
This game is nearly a pick’em with the Minnesota Twins money line at -120 with the Tampa Bay Rays at +100 and a total of 9. This is a showdown between two of the top teams in the American League.
The Rays have slight starting pitching edge with Rasmussen having a better track record than Smeltzer. However Smeltzer has pitched toe-to-toe with Rasmussen numbers wise thus far.
The Twins have a solid hitting advantage with better numbers in almost any offensive category. The Minnesota bats have really clicked since Correa heated up.
This isn’t my strongest play on the board as this will be a highly competitive game. However, I will make a small play on the Minnesota Twins money line.
Prediction: Minnesota Twins Moneyline -112
