New York Yankees vs Cincinnati Reds Analysis

The Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees meet for the rubber match of a three game series from the Bronx on Thursday evening. The Yankees evened things up with a 7-6 10th inning victory last night.

The Reds watched a five game winning streak fall by the wayside with countless unearned runs. The 27 year-old lefty Nestor Cortes gets the nod for New York, while the powerful righty Luis Castillo toes the rubber for Cincinnati. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM EST/4:05 PST.

Castillo’s Audition For Trade Deadline

The Cincinnati Reds had won a season-high five straight games prior to losing 7-6 in a game where they allowed five unearned runs.

The most critical being a 10th inning wild pitch by Alexis Diaz that resulted in D.J. LeMahieu scoring the game winning run. Struggling southpaw Mike Minor gave up five runs on five hits in four innings, but four of those runs were unearned. Mike Moustakas, Kyle Farmer and Stuart Fairchild went back-to-back-to-back with homeruns in the 2nd inning.

The Reds have struggled at the plate more often than not and currently rank 24th in OPS. Luis Castillo has been brilliant recently and we should get his best today as this is basically a trade deadline audition for a potential suitor on the grandest stage.

Castillo has allowed a measly two runs across 20 innings in his last three outings combined. He has quality starts in five of his last six games and carries a minuscule 2.92 ERA into the game.

Castillo hasn’t faced the Yankees since 2017 so it will be interesting to see how they stack up with each other. The Reds will travel to St. Louis after the game for their final series before the All-Star break against the Cardinals.

Yanks Win On Wild Pitch Walk Off

The New York Yankees snapped a three game losing streak with a 10th inning walkoff in bizarre fashion. Giancarlo Stanton tied the game in the bottom of the 8th with a tater over the short porch in right field.

The game remained tied 6-6 until the bottom of the 10th when Alexis Diaz threw two straight wild pitches and birthday boy D.J. LeMahieu crossed home on with the game winning run.

Starter Luis Severino was anything but sharp as he allowed three straight homeruns in the span of four pitches while pitching only two innings. The Bronx Bombers are #1 across the board offensively, runs scored, home runs, OPS, walks, you name it.

Nestor Cortes has solid numbers on the season with a 7-3 record, 2.74 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. However most of those numbers were built during the first few months of the season as he has struggled more often than not recently.

Cortes has allowed 17 earned runs across 28.2 innings in his last six starts. He made it to the 6th inning in only four of those six starts and more concerning he has allowed nine home runs in that span.

The Bombers will remain in the Bronx after this contest as they face the Boston Red Sox in their last series before the All-Star break.

New York Yankees vs Cincinnati Reds Prediction

The New York Yankees are heavily favored with a -195 money line, while the Cincinnati Reds sit at +162 with a total of 8.

Obviously the Yankees are the superior team here, they have a much more potent lineup and their bullpen is top notch while the Reds is basically the worst in the league. However, the Reds have a tremendous starting pitching advantage in my eyes.

Castillo has been absolutely spot on of late with only two runs allowed in his last three starts across 20 innings. He is definitely on the trading block and dominant start at Yankee Stadium would go a long way.

Cortes hasn’t been good for over a month now and he is giving up home runs left and right. The Reds tattooed Severino for three bombs and they actually hit lefties better than righties. The Yankees did put up seven runs last night, however five of them were unearned.

Let’s keep the bullpens out of it and take the Cincinnati Reds +0.5 in the first five innings with +104 odds. I’m fully expecting Castillo to limit New York to a few runs during the first five, in which case we only need one or two from the Reds as a tie after five will give us a cashed ticket.

Prediction: Cincinnati Reds +0.5 F5 (first five innings) +104 FD
