New York Yankees vs Cleveland Guardians Analysis
Cleveland earned a two-game mini sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays in two low-scoring affairs while the Yankees have had six days of rest. The Yankees won the regular season series 5-1 and they covered the -1.5 runline in four of those six games this season. The Bronx should be rockin’ on Tuesday night as playoff baseball returns to Yankee Stadium.
Guardians Winning Ugly
The Guardians beat the Rays in the first round of the playoffs, but it certainly was not pretty. Thanks to a 15-inning marathon in Game 2, the Guardians and Rays played 24 innings and only recorded four runs and 22 hits in the series.
Home runs by Jose Ramirez (two-run) and Oscar Gonzalez (solo) were responsible for Cleveland’s three runs in the series. The Guardians are going to need to do a little more than that in this round against the Yankees.
Cal Quantrill will take the mound for the first time this postseason. Quantril put together a fantastic regular season and the Guardians won 21 of his 28 starts. One of those losses came in his only start against the Yankees this season, but that was back in April and he only allowed three earned runs.
On the road this season, Quantril has a 3.53 ERA, a .282 batting average against, a .411 slugging percentage against, a 3.94 FIP, and a 1.39 WHIP. These numbers are worse than his home numbers, so it is fair to expect Quantrill to have some struggles this evening. The Guardians winning 21 of his 28 starts is an unsustainable pace.
Bronx Bombers
The Yankees had their ups-and-downs this season, but they finished as the No. 2 seed in the American League with 99 wins. The Yankees dominated at home this year, winning 57 of their 81 games in the Bronx.
Gerrit Cole will make the start tonight for the Yankees at home. Cole, like the Yankees, has had his ups-and-downs this season, but it still ended up being a great year for him. He faced the Guardians back in April and allowed no runs on four hits with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.
At home this season, Cole has a 3.20 ERA, a .209 batting average against, a .373 slugging percentage against, a 2.79 FIP, and a 0.94 WHIP.
New York Yankees vs Cleveland Guardians Prediction
The game, on paper, is a mismatch and the Yankees should win, hence the line being NYY -220. However, it is October, so I cannot be laying that type of juice.
New York hasn’t played in a week and the Guardians have pitching that can shut down this Yankees lineup if they are running cold as they have at some spots this season. We’ll lean toward the road ‘dog with the +1.5 head start. Our recommendation is to play the Cleveland Guardians on the +1.5 runline, widely available at -125 at the time of posting.
