New York Yankees vs Seattle Mariners Analysis
The Seattle Mariners face the New York Yankees in the rubber match of their three game series on Wednesday afternoon from the Bronx.
The Mariners prevailed 8-6 yesterday in a hard fought game to even things up. The New look Yankees will start their ace Gerrit Cole, while the righty Luis Castillo makes his first start for Seattle. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM EST/10:05 PST.
Castillo Gets First Start For Seattle
The Seattle Mariners will start the newly acquired Luis Castillo for the first time on Wednesday afternoon. Castillo is 4-4 with an impressive 2.86 and 90 strikeouts across 85 innings with the Cincinnati Reds.
As a Red, he held the Yankees to only one run across seven innings in a 7-6 victory last month. Outfielder Sam Haggerty hit what proved to be a game winning solo-blast in the 7th inning of last night’s 8-6 victory.
The Mariners overcame an ugly outing by Logan Gilbert where he gave up six runs on seven hits in only 5.1 innings of work. Seattle still awaits the return of their top two sluggers in Ty France and Julio Rodriguez, who are still dealing with wrist injuries.
Their absence has further hampered a lineup that already ranks only 23rd in runs scored and 25th in batting average. The Mariners currently occupy the 2nd Wild Card spot with a game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Bronx Bombers Look To Win Another Series
The New York Yankees have the American Leagues best record at 70-35 despite losing 8-6 last night. Jameson Taillon had a horrible outing where he allowed six runs (five earned) across only 4.2 innings.
He also walked four and gave up two home runs. Josh Donaldson hit his 10th home run, going 2 for 3 with three RBI. The Yankees were able to add Frankie Montas, Lou Trivino, Harrison Bader & Andrew Benintendi and part ways with Joey Gallo & Jordan Montgomery at the trade deadline.
The Bombers have earned their nickname this season as they lead the league in runs scored, homeruns and OPS. Gerrit Cole gets the nod in the series deciding game for New York. He is 9-3 with a 3.30 ERA and 162 strikeouts across 125.1 innings. Cole has been lights out at home with a 4-2 record and 2.55 ERA in 11 starts.
New York Yankees vs Seattle Mariners Prediction
The New York Yankees come into this contest as favorites with a -180 money line, while the Seattle Mariners sit at +155 with a total of 7. This one has all the makings of a pitchers duel.
It’s obviously terrifying to take an under when the Yankees are involved but Castillo is one hurler that could be up to the task. He has been one of the leagues best pitchers over the last month and he has already shut down the Yankees once in New York.
Gerrit Cole has been terrific at home and should be able to make quick work out of a lineup without Julio Rodriguez and most likely Ty France.
Both teams bullpens can also get the job done as the Yankees rank 2nd with a 2.90 ERA and the Mariners 10th with a 3.53 ERA. It also feels like day games tend to be slow starts as players get taken out of their normal routines.
Prediction: Under 7.5 -125
