New York Yankees vs Tampa Bay Rays Analysis
The New York Yankees will be looking for a sweep over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night from Yankee Stadium. The Rays will fight to salvage the final game of the series and gain some ground in the American League East.
Veteran righty Luis Severino gets the nod for New York, while reliever turned starter Jalen Beeks takes the mound for Tampa Bay. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM EST/4:05 PST.
Yanks Bring Out The Brooms
The New York Yankees are close to unstoppable. They have the best record in baseball (46-16) and are off to an epic beginning of the season. They average over five runs a game, which is 3rd most in the MLB.
They also rank 1st in homeruns, 2nd in slugging and 10th in batting average. The Yankees prevailed in a 4-3 game over the Rays yesterday on the back of a three run bomb by catcher Kyle Higashioka.
Starter Nestor Cortes worked his way back into form while allowing only one run in 5.1 innings of work. Luis Severino will get the ball for the pinstripes on Thursday night.
Severino has a 4-1 record with a 2.80 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. Severino was lights out in his latest outing with six innings of one run baseball.
Tampa Looks For Ray Of Sunshine
The Tampa Bay Rays entered this series with high hopes of gaining ground on the Yankees in the division, but they have hit a brick wall. They lost the opener 2-0 and suffered a 4-3 defeat yesterday.
Shane McClanahan held his own but took the loss as he allowed four runs (only one earned) on three hits across six innings. Leadoff man Yandy Diaz went 2 for 5 with a double and run scored.
The Rays offense just can’t hang with that of the Bronx Bombers. They rank only 20th in runs scored with 4.18 per game. They also rank only 24th in batting average and slugging percentage.
Tampa Bay still has a hold on a Wild Card spot with a 37-25 record they sit two games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays for 2nd place in the American League East. The southpaw Jalen Beeks will toe the rubber in hopes of stealing the final game of the series against the vaunted Yankees.
This will basically be a bullpen game as Beeks has only started once and maxed out at 2.1 innings so far this season. Beeks does have a 1.38 ERA across 26 innings of work. The Rays are well known for these bullpen games, but they will need to make the perfect moves to contain this potent offense.
New York Yankees vs Tampa Bay Rays Prediction
The New York Yankees are heavily favored at -245 on the money line, while the Tampa Bay Rays sit at +205 with a total of 8. Tampa Bay has had success at Yankee Stadium, with a 13-6 record in their last 19 games in the Bronx.
They also beat Severino last time they faced him. However, Severino has been razor sharp with only six runs allowed across 32.1 innings in his last five starts.
The Rays do have a solid pen, but I can’t fully trust any team in a bullpen game against the Yankees right now. We obviously aren’t going to recommend a -245 money line, but the run line is sitting at -115. Yankees run line it is.
Prediction: New York Yankees -1.5 -115
