New York Yankees vs Toronto Blue Jays Analysis

The Toronto Blue Jays head into the Bronx to begin a crucial four game weekend series against the New York Yankees on Thursday evening. The Yankees won 8-7 against the Tampa Bay Rays on a dramatic walkoff grand slam by Josh Donaldson.

The Blue Jays managed to salvage a 6-1 victory in the third and final game of their series against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yanks own an 8-4 edge in the season series over the Jays after winning two of three in mid-June.

The newly acquired Frankie Montas will make his third start for New York, while the veteran righty Jose Berrios toes the rubber for Toronto. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM EST/4:05 PST.

Jays Need To Get Back On Track

The Toronto Blue snapped a three game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Ross Stripling looked amazing in his first game back from the IL. He held the Orioles scoreless for 6.1 innings while allowing only one hit and striking out seven.

Yimi Garcia picjed up the win with 0.2 shutout innings. Designated hitter Alejandro Kirk had a double & two RBI and Bo Bichette had the only multi-hit game with a double & single.

At 62-54 Toronto owns the third and final Wild Card spot with a one game lead over the Minnesota Twins. Jose Berrios gets his turn in the rotation desperately needing to right the ship. He comes into this game with an 8-5 record, however he has a bloated 5.23 ERA and 1.38 WHIP.

Berrios was hammered in his last outing against the Cleveland Guardians, giving up eight runs on eight hits in only four innings. He’s also allowed a league high 26 homeruns in only 122 innings of work.

Donaldson Hits Walkoff Grand Slam In The 10th

The New York Yankees narrowly avoided being swept by the Tampa Bay Rays as Josh Donaldson hit a walkoff grand slam in the 10th inning. The Rays had built a three run lead in the top of the inning before the Yanks rallied and won 8-7. Domingo German gave up three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Aroldis Chapman got the lucky win after giving up two earned runs in the top of the 10th. The Bronx Bombers still have a double digit lead in the American League East, despite losing 11 of their last 14 games.

Their bats may have come to life with their eight run performance after scoring only nine runs in their previous six games. Former Oakland Athletic Frankie Montas draws his 3rd start for New York. In his last three starts, Montas is 1-0 with a 6.92 ERA and 2.07 WHIP across 13 innings of work.

Montas took advantage of making half of his starts at the spacious Oakland Coliseum. He has consistently struggled on the road and now his home is hitters paradise.

New York Yankees vs Toronto Blue Jays Prediction

The New York Yankees are favored with a money line set at -140, while the Toronto Blue Jays sit at +120 with a total of 8. Both teams had ice cold bats prior to busting out last night.

The Yanks scored 8 when the dust settled in the 10th inning, while the Jays scored six runs without the benefit of a longball. Montas will be making his third career appearance and second start against Toronto, going 1-1 with a 8.10 ERA & 1.50 WHIP across 6.2 innings of work.

Meanwhile Berrios is 2-3 with 5.35 ERA and 1.37 WHIP across 37 innings in his eight starts against the Yankees. He is 1-3 with a 6.66 ERA and 1.60 WHIP across 24.1 innings at Yankee Stadium. Current Jays hitters are a combined 19-51 for a .373 batting average and .836 OPS against Montas.

While current Yankees are 35-128 for a .273 batting average, .800 OPS with 5 home runs against Berrios. The Blue Jays bullpen is inconsistent and ranks middle of the pack in most categories.

The Yankees pen is elite, however they may be a tired bunch after utilizing five relievers to combine for 5.1 innings last night.

It seems like we are getting a low number on this total based on how cold both lineups have been prior to last night, but these are two talented lineups that should be riding high after coming back to life last night. I’ll gladly play an over 8 in this one.

Prediction: Over 8 Runs Scored -125
