Oakland Athletics vs Boston Red Sox Analysis
The Boston Red Sox travel to RingCentral Coliseum to play the Oakland A’s in the first of a three game series. It’s a battle of righties with Nathan Eovaldi going up against James Kaprelian.
The line opened for the Red Sox as -155 favorites, the A’s as +145 dogs – and the market has now moved to Boston as a -155 favorite and the A’s a +145 underdog. The total is 7 with the over at -115 and the under at -105.
Boston Red Sox Betting Preview
Boston is coming off a 3-4 homestand against the Orioles and the Reds, while the A’s went 1-6 in their last seven games (at home) versus Texas and Houston.
The Red Sox have found their hitting groove, especially star free agent shortstop Trevor Story. They’re now up to 6th best in MLB in OPS at .733 with a .258 team batting average, and have an 8th best OPS against right-handed pitchers at .722. Pitching is middle-of-the-road as the Sawks have a 16th best team ERA of 3.87 and a 1.20 WHIP.
Nathan Eovaldi has pitched well away from the Green Monster at Fenway Park. In five road starts and 30.1 innings, he has a 2.97 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP and 32 strikeouts – that’s more than one per inning.
His season-long numbers of 3.77 ERA and 1.12 WHIP are somewhat inflated because of the one terrible start at home against Houston, where he gave up five home runs in 1.2 innings of work.
Oakland Athletics Betting Preview
There’s really not much I can say about Oakland that I haven’t said before. They’re an under-manned, bad baseball team with a few good players, and it looks like management wants to make the product on the field so unpopular they can move the team to a better market – like Las Vegas. The A’s are dead last in team OPS at .606, and are 20th in team ERA at 4.12 with a 1.29 WHIP.
James Kaprelian has below average numbers for his 2022 season. In six starts and 27.1 innings, the right-hander has a 5.93 ERA, 1.35 WHIP with 21 strikeouts, giving up eleven walks and six home runs – that’s two per nine innings of work – and five long flies in his last three starts. He’s not an “innings eater,” as his longest outing is just 5.2 frames.
Oakland Athletics vs Boston Red Sox Prediction
The Red Sox have a clear edge with starting pitching and at the plate, and Kaprelian will have to pitch really well to keep Oakland in this ball game – but I’m not sure that he can against Boston.
The visitors have over a .100 edge in team OPS, and are 46 points better in team batting average. Boston has an 11th best strikeout rate, while the A’s have the 7th worst in MLB. It’s pretty obvious where I’m going here – the Red Sox on the moneyline, and sprinkle a little on the run line.
