Padres vs Pirates Analysis

The Pittsburgh Pirates pay a visit to Petco park to play the San Diego Padres in a battle of southpaws, as Jose Quintana gets the start against Sean Manaea.

The Pirates come off winning two of three from the Rockies in Pittsburgh, while San Diego lost two of three to a surging Brewers team at home.

The Padres are a heavy -220 favorite and the Bucs are a +180 underdog, the over/under is 7 with -110 on both sides.

Pirates Preview

There’s no nice way to sugarcoat it: The Pirates simply aren’t a good baseball team. They rank 26th in both OPS and ERA at .649 and 4.71 respectively, with a team average of .225 and WHIP of 1.38.

However, tonight’s starter Jose Quintana is one of the Bucs’ better pitchers. In eight starts and 40.2 innings he has a 2.43 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and 34 strikeouts.

The Colombian native has pitched in the majors since 2012, and has a career ERA of 3.80 and WHIP of 1.28, and a strikeout rate of about 0.9 Ks per inning.

Padres Preview

While the Padres still have a good record at 28-16, they hit an offensive mini-slump in their recent three game series against the Brewers, scoring only five combined runs.

For the season, they’re only 22nd in OPS at .666 with a team average of .231. The pitching has carried the Friars this year with an 8th best staff ERA of 3.41 and a 1.13 WHIP.

Starter Sean Manaea was a good signing for San Diego before the start of the year, and his numbers are decent. In eight starts and 49.0 innings he’s compiled a 4.04 ERA. a 1.12 WHIP with 55 strikeouts.

After three solid starts to begin the season, the right-hander has given up three runs or more in his last five starts – and four home runs in his last three outings.

Padres vs Pirates Prediction

This figures to be a low-scoring game with two talented pitchers in a hurler-friendly yard, and both lineups in the bottom 1/3rd in baseball in OPS and batting average.

Although Manaea has struggled in his last few starts, I don’t think the Pirates have enough pop at the plate to do much damage.

The moneyline price (-220) doesn’t give us much value, and I’m not sure San Diego can cover the run line, even though we’re getting +100.

I think both starters can keep these lineups in check through the first half of the game. That’s why I’ll lean to the 1st 5 innings under the run total, but I’d tread (and bet) lightly on this game.

Prediction: 1st 5 innings Under Runs Scored
