Philadelphia Phillies vs New York Mets Analysis

The Phillies put up a five-spot in the bottom of the eighth inning and Brad Hand shut the door on the Mets in the top of the ninth. The Phillies are favorites once again as they trot ex-Met Zack Wheeler out for the start against Tylor Megill, who was impressive in his Opening Day outing.

Bohm-Headed Plays

The Phillies pulled off quite a rally on Monday night after falling behind 3-0. Third baseman Alec Bohm committed three errors in the first three innings, and it looked like the final outcome wouldn’t be in doubt.  Down 4-0 in the eighth, the Phillies scored five runs on four hits against the Mets’ bullpen to take a 5-4 lead. Brad Hand looked great in the top of the ninth and locked in the save.

Tonight, the Phillies have one of their best pitchers on the hill in Zack Wheeler. Wheeler began his career with the Mets and started to hit his stride in 2019. The Mets decided to not pay Zack, and he chose Philly in free agency, where he finished second in Cy Young voting last season. Toward the end of last season, Wheeler shut down the Mets in his last two starts against them.

Missing Edwin

Mets closer Edwin Diaz is on the bereavement list, and his absence was felt last night. Reliever Trevor May had to leave the game with an arm injury he suffered while delivering a pitch, and the Mets never recovered. Relievers Joley Rodriguez and Seth Lugo got shelled and allowed the Phillies to score five runs and ultimately win the game.

Coming into tonight’s matchup, the Mets will have to try to bounce back against Wheeler who is making his first start of the season. Wheeler generally pitches well against the Mets and always has that extra motivation when he faces his old team.

Megill pitched well in the Mets’ opener against the Nations. Megill is a groundball pitcher that does a good job minimizing hard-hit balls.

Philadelphia Phillies vs New York Mets Prediction

Yesterday, I truly thought the Mets would win, and I had them +130 on the moneyline. While it’s way too early in the season to give up on any team, the Mets’ eighth inning last night was worrisome for this team. That type of loss always affects a team’s mental state, especially when they have two more matchups against the same team. There’s an old saying that you can lose a game twice, and I think we’ll see last night’s result linger into tonight.

Give me Wheeler and the Phillies -145 on the moneyline on Tuesday night. The Phillies have the momentum, Wheeler has the vendetta and the Mets seem to have a shaky bullpen early in the season.
