Phillies vs Mets Analysis

Both the Phillies and the Mets are coming off losses on Sunday, but both teams took home their opening series of the 2022 season. The Mets took three of four from the Nationals and the Phillies won two of three against the Athletics.

The Phillies finished second in the NL East last season with the Mets came in third. Both teams improved mightily this offseason, and their first series against each other this season should be exciting.

Fightin’ Phils

Philadelphia took home two wins in their first series of the season behind excellent starting pitching and strong offense from its stars. Aaron Nola and Kyle Gibson did a great job shutting down the A’s offense and keeping the games close. Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins mashed throughout the series and helped Philly produce runs when they needed them.

Coming into this series, Philly will not have either of its aces available versus the Mets tonight. Instead, Philly will rely on reliever Ranger Suarez to make the start and hold the Mets down. Last season, Suarez did a great job limiting opponents’ hard-hit balls, batting averages, and slugging percentages.

The Phillies are only batting .231 as a team so far this year, so in order to take home a win against the Mets, their lineup needs to wake up.

Meet the Mets

New York won three of four games against the Nationals and looked like an inspired team to start the season. The Mets took advantage of the rebuilding Nationals and the Mets staff held Washington to a .164 batting average and a 0.71 WHIP.

Taijuan Walker takes the bump for the Mets after a rocky season last year. Walker started last season as an All-Star, then struggled with hard-hit ball percentage, slugging percentage, and walks, and did not record many strikeouts. In order for the Mets to keep this game close, New York will need Walker to return to his All-Star form and the Mets offense needs to carry over the momentum they built last series.

The Mets hit .293 with 41 hits in their four games against the Nationals to kick off the season.

Phillies vs Mets Prediction

The Mets are pretty sizable underdogs in their first matchup vs Philly this season, and I think the oddsmakers got this line wrong. The Mets played a much stronger series against the Nationals than the Phillies did against the Athletics.

Walker was an All-Star last season, but he fell off after the All-Star break. Suarez did a great job in relief last season and will probably only be on the mound for two to three innings today. I expect Walker to settle in early and show he is capable of more performances that landed him an All-Star nod last season. I like the Mets to take the opening matchup against the Phillies at a nice underdog price.
