Texas Rangers vs Colorado Rockies Analysis
The Rockies exercised their road demons by taking the opening game 6-4. Colorado’s offense was solid with 14 hits against Rangers’ pitching, and the bullpen did enough to hang on for the win. Conor Joe and C.J. Cron went yard, and the Rockies are playing with more confidence than they did last year.
Chicks Dig the Long Ball
If you like watching games with plenty of offense, the Rangers are your team. If you like good pitching… well, not so much.
Texas had a rough opening series in Toronto against one of the best hitting lineups in baseball, giving up 20 runs – then surrendering another six Monday night. Rangers pitchers have given up 42 hits in 35 innings (nine of those were home runs) for a 5.91 team ERA.
Two costly errors led to three unearned runs in the series opener, and combined with a poor performance from the bullpen, cost them the game. Starter Taylor Hearn was able to work himself out of multiple jams in four innings of work. He gave up eight hits, but only one earned run, one walk and struck out six.
This Rangers team kind of resembles the Rockies’ “Blake Street Bombers” of the mid to late 1990s. They have a really good lineup that can hit and put runs on the board, but a questionable pitching staff. And it looks like they’ll have to score plenty of runs most games in order to have a chance to win.
Rangers vs Rockies Prediction
The Rangers pitching staff hasn’t looked very good in the first four games, and I don’t see Martin Perez shutting down the Rockies bats, especially facing a Colorado lineup with a lot of right-handed hitters. The southpaw is coming off a 2021 season with a 4.74 ERA and 1.51 WHIP.
Rockies starter Chad Kuhl profiles as a typical fifth starter and middle reliever with a career ERA of 4.44 and 1.42 WHIP.
The Rangers didn’t like how Monday’s game ended, when umpires ruled Mitch Garver committed “slide interference” that prevented Brendan Rodgers from making a clean throw to first. Texas should be fired up and ready to even the series.
We’ve got two pretty good hitting lineups plus two average-at-best starting pitchers and that should equal a lot of hits and runs at Globe Life Field. I’ll take the over 10 runs as my best bet.
