Rangers vs Royals Analysis
The Kansas City Royals visit Globe Life Field to take on the Texas Rangers in the first of a three game set. It’s an unexpectedly good pitching matchup, with right-hander Brad Keller getting the start against southpaw Martin Perez.
Both hurlers have performed much better than expected with ERAs under 2.50, and both lineups are in the bottom five of baseball in OPS.
Royals Preview
The Royals don’t hit very well against any pitchers in Major League Baseball, as they’re 28th in OPS at .600 with a team batting average of .220. And they’re only slightly better against left-handed pitching with a 26th-best OPS of .619.
Brad Keller has been a very pleasant surprise for the Royals’ starting rotation. In five starts and 31.0 innings of work, the right-hander has compiled a 1.74 ERA and 0.84 WHIP, giving up just 18 hits and eight walks.
His strikeout number is a little low at 19, but he’s managed to avoid most hard contact and given up only two home runs.
And given the Royals’ bullpen, they’ll need their starters to pitch as well and as long as possible – and/or hope they get a big enough lead into the later innings. Kansas City’s pen is the 3rd-worst in baseball, only better than the Reds and the Rockies.
Rangers Preview
Texas hitting against all pitchers hasn’t been good, as they’re 27th in OPS at .619, and the Rangers have the 3rd-worst OPS against right-handers at .574. That’s not good news as they face one of the best righties in the American League in Mr. Keller.
Martin Perez has been a fair-to-middlin’ pitcher throughout his career, with a 4.65 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. But something seems to agree with the southpaw in Texas, as through five starts he’s put up a 2.25 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, allowing 20 hits, nine walks and zero home runs.
The difference between his 2022 and career numbers indicate Perez is probably due for some negative regression, but so far this year he’s been pretty darn good.
The Rangers pitching staff has gotten out of the basement of MLB, as they now have a 23rd-best team ERA of 3.97, WHIP of 1.27 and a 19th-best bullpen ERA of 3.53. It looks like they’ve solved some of their pitching problems a month into the season.
Rangers vs Royals Prediction
This is an excellent starting pitching matchup and both teams have really struggled on offense the first month into the season.
I can’t rely on the Royals bullpen to hold a lead or a game total. That’s why I’ll take the 1st 5 innings under the run total.
Prediction: 1st 5 innings Under Total Runs
