Red Sox vs Blue Jays Analysis

The Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox wrap up their series with the rubber game of a three game set from Fenway Park on Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Jays evened up the series with a commanding 6-1 victory. The Red Sox dropped back to .500 while the Jays improved to 7-5.

The gritty veteran Kevin Gausman is slated for Toronto, up against the youngster Tanner Houck for Boston. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35pm ET. as it’s getaway day for both teams.

Berrios Steps Up For Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays scored an easy victory over the Boston Red Sox after scoring five runs in the first two innings. It looked like Jose Berrios was going to struggle again after allowing an RBI single to J.D. Martinez in the first inning.

However he completely settled down and didn’t allow another run while scattering eight hits and a walk across a total of six innings with six strikeouts. Raimel Tapia led the offensive attack with a two run blast in the 2nd inning.

The Jays will turn to marquee free agent acquisition Kevin Gausman to win the series. Gausman is essentially taking the spot of Cy Young award winner Robbie Ray.

Gausman was spectacular last season in San Francisco for the Giants, but as he knows from his time in Baltimore, pitching in the American League East is a different animal. Gausman has been average in his first two starts as a Blue Jay with an 0-1 record and 4.22 ERA.

Leadoff man George Springer left Wednesday’s game with what is being called a forearm contusion and his status for Thursday is uncertain at best.

Sox Hop Back to .500

The Boston Red Sox sit at .500 once again after a demoralizing 6-1 loss. Boston has went back and forth between wins and losses in their last four games and haven’t strung together more two wins or losses yet this season.

Nick Pivetta took his third loss of the season in as many starts, after allowing five earned runs on seven hits and four walks in only four innings. Pivetta has just struggled with Toronto in his career and that was the case again on Wednesday night.

Pivetta has pitched poorly this season regardless of competition and now an ERA that ballooned over 10. J.D. Martinez provided what little offense the Red Sox produced with a two-for-two night with an RBI double.

Unfortunately Martinez left the game with an injury and he will most likely miss tonight’s contest. Tanner Houck will be asked to go toe-to-toe with Kevin Gausman.

Last season the young right-hander proved he should be up for the task. He was nearly untouchable in his three start cup of coffee in 2020. He posted a 0.53 ERA and 0.88 WHIP with a 33% strikeout rate.

Houck has continued pitching well this season, with a 1-0 record 3.00 ERA in two starts. Last time out against Minnesota he threw 5.2 shutout innings with only two hits and three walks.

Red Sox vs Blue Jays Prediction

We basically have a pick’em between these evenly matched teams. The money line is set at -108 for the Toronto Blue Jays and -102 for the Boston Red Sox with a total 9.

I have a feeling we may have similar lines for these head-to-head matchups going forward. Both teams are just so evenly matched with potent offenses that have yet to reach their full potential.

They have players that will be going neck-and-neck for the American League MVP in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Rafael Devers. And we also have what seem to be very evenly matched starting pitchers.

I think it’s going to be tough find an edge for the side in this one and the total seems right on at 9. I lean Red Sox but that could just be my fandom shining through. What I did find is an amazing player prop at plus money.

Xander Bogaerts is heating up, he has went 9 for 21 with 3 doubles and a home run in his last five games. Bogaerts has a solid lengthy track record against starting pitcher Kevin Gausman.

Bogaerts is 12 for 40 for .300 batting average with home run and two doubles. Solid but not out of this world.

Here’s the thing, Gausman barely ever walks anyone which has been the case this season with zero walks in two starts and against Bogaerts with only one walk in those 40 at bats. Avoiding walks are big in total base props and Bogaerts number is set at 1.5 +125. I’m on his over.

Official Player Prop Play: Xander Bogaerts Over 1.5 Total Bases +125 DK

Prediction: Boston Red Sox Moneyline (-102)
