Red Sox vs Mariners Analysis

The Seattle Mariners and Boston Red Sox play the first game of an extended four game series from Fenway Park on Thursday night.

The Red Sox beat the Houston Astros 5-1 yesterday, winning their three game series 2-1. The Mariners also won 5-1 yesterday, to salvage the 3rd and final game of their three game set against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The starting pitching matchup features the oldest player in the league in 42 year-old Rich Hill who will be opposed by one of the youngster in 24 year-old George Kirby. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/ 4:10 PST.

Not Over The Hill

The Boston Red Sox are looking to build on the momentum from winning two of three in each of their last two series after splitting a two game set in the prior series.

Nick Pivetta and company looked great in yesterday’s 5-1 victory over the Houston Astros. Pivetta was lights out, hurling a complete game while allowing only one run on two hits and striking out eight.

That’s three straight dominant starts for Pivetta who has allowed only two runs in his last 22 innings of work. Xander Bogaerts hit a solo dinger while Rafael Devers went two for three with a double, triple and RBI. Red Sox Nation really needed this victory over Houston after an ugly 13-4 drubbing on Tuesday.

Still the Sox need to get more production from the rest of their lineup outside of their big three of Devers, Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez.

The veteran southpaw Rich Hill will take the hill for Boston on Thursday. He has pitched for 11 different organizations in his career and is in his 3rd stint with the Red Sox. Unbelievable. He has done a lot to prove he isn’t over the Hill, posting a 2.89 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across 28 innings.

Seattle Continues East Coast Swing

The Seattle Mariners managed to sneak out of Toronto with a 5-1 victory over the Blue Jays after losing the first two games of the series. Marco Gonzales was spot on, tossing six innings while allowing only one run on five hits.

Three relievers each pitched a scoreless inning to wrap up the victory. First baseman Ty France went 3 for 5 with a two run bomb in the 7th. France has provided plenty of pop with a .325 batting average and .875 OPS to go along with six homeruns and 27 RBI.

The rest of the lineup could definitely step it up as they are middle of the pack in runs scored and OPS. Rookie starter George Kirby gets the nod for Seattle to open the series.

He is the third ranked prospect in the Mariners system and has looked great so far during his cup of coffee in the majors. In two starts he has thrown 10 innings and yielded only one earned run (3 total) while striking out eight.

Red Sox vs Mariners Prediction

The Boston Red Sox come into this game as marginal favorites at -130, with the Seattle Mariners at +110 and a total of 8.5. The Red Sox seem like they are starting to come around and there could be light at the end of tunnel.

After this series they play the underperforming Chicago White Sox, followed by 10 straight games against the cellar dwelling Orioles, Athletics and Reds.

The rookie George Kirby has looked sharp in his first two starts but he hasn’t dealt with the pressure of pitching at Fenway Park or had to deal with a heart of a batting order as hot as Boston’s. Rich Hill should be able to do enough for the Red Sox to win this game as a small favorite.

Prediction: Boston Red Sox Moneyline -130
