Red Sox vs Orioles Analysis
The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox will begin a rare five game series at Fenway Park on Friday night. The Red Sox won two of three against the Chicago White Sox in a series where they scored 33 runs despite scoring only one run in the second game.
The Orioles lost two of three at Yankee Stadium against the Bronx Bombers. Rookie righty Kyle Bradish gets the nod for Baltimore, while reliever turned starter Garrett Whitlock toes the rubber for Boston. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
Surging Sox Look Scary Good
After a horrendous first five weeks of the 2022 season, the Boston Red Sox are starting to look more like the team that went to the American League Championship series last season.
Red Sox hitters have been posting eye popping numbers for weeks and that continued as they scored 16 runs in last night’s rubber match against the Chicago White Sox.
Enrique Hernandez got things started quickly with solo blast in the first at bat of the game and Boston never looked back. Trevor Story continued his historic run, going 2 for 4 with a three run shot in the second inning.
Starter Michael Wacha allowed five runs on seven hits in only 4.1 innings, while the bullpen only allowed two runs in the next 4.2 innings. The Red Sox offense has become a run producing machine as they have scored 5+ runs in 10 of their last 13 games.
Boston’s pitching staff has held their own as they rank 8th in opponent batting average and 13th in team ERA. Red Sox Nation looks to Garrett Whitlock to continue to domination on Friday night.
Whitlock has a solid 3.58 ERA and 1.16 WHIP but seems more suited to be a dominant reliever as he hasn’t pitched more than five innings in any of his six starts. He seems to be tailing off as he allowed five runs on 10 hits in only three innings pitched in his last start against the Seattle Mariners.
Orioles Shipping Off To Boston
The Baltimore Orioles have five straight games against the Boston Red Sox buzzsaw beginning Friday night at historic Fenway Park. They managed to win the first game of a three game set against the Yankees but lost the final two, including a 2-0 defeat yesterday.
They wasted a solid effort by starter Tyler Wells who threw five innings of two run baseball. No Oriole hitter had an extra base hit and only rookie phenom Adley Rutschman had a two hits.
It was the first multi-hit game by the MLB #1 rated prospect. Baltimore is averaging only 3.53 runs a game with a bottom five OPS. The Orioles will also be starting a rookie in Kyle Bradish. Bradish has a 1-3 record, 5.74 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 5 starts and 26.2 innings pitched.
He held the Red Sox to 3 runs (two earned) on 5 hits in 6 innings of work. However, that was in late April and this Red Sox offense is a different animal right now.
Red Sox vs Orioles Prediction
The Boston Red Sox are heavily favored at -200 with the Baltimore Orioles money line set at +170 and a total of 9.5. To say that the Boston hitters are hot would be an understatement.
Trevor Story and J.D. Martinez are competing with only each other for May American League Player of the Month. They scored 16 runs twice in their last three game set against Chicago.
This is their second look at the rookie Bradish and that is only going favor a lineup loaded with smart professional hitters. I do think the Orioles will put up some runs on Whitlock and the Sox pen.
I couldn’t talk you out of betting anything Red Sox or over but I will keep it simple and make the Red Sox team total over my official play for this contest.
Prediction: Boston Red Sox Team Total Over 5.5 -110
