Red Sox vs White Sox Analysis

The Chicago White Sox visit historic Fenway Park for a three game weekend series with the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox are coming off an embarrassing 8-0 home loss to the Los Angeles Angels in a matinee game.

The White Sox beat their cross town rivals the Cubs at home 4-3. Neither one of these teams have lived up to expectations so far this season with records sitting at 10-16 for Boston and 11-13 for Chicago.

The Red Sox turn to their ace Nathan Eovaldi, while Vince Velasquez gets his turn for the White Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST.

White Sox Could Be Turning Corner

The Chicago White Sox opened the season as prohibitive favorites to win the American League Central but find themselves in third place with an 11-13 record. They rank 28th in runs scored, 24th in batting average and 23rd in OPS.

They have struggled to score runs with consistency and have some work to do to make up for their 8 game losing streak last month. The Pale Hose have won four of their last five games thanks in large part to a pitching staff that has only 10 runs during that span.

On Wednesday they completed a two game mini-sweep with a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Jose Abreu led the offensive attack, going 2 for 4 with a solo blast. Lucas Giolito earned the victory with a 10 strikeout performance where he allowed three earned runs across 5.2 innings.

Liam Hendricks pitched a clean 9th inning to earn his 7th save of the season. The White Sox hope Vince Velasquez can replicate his last start which was his best of the young season.

He threw 5.2 innings of shutout baseball in a 4-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Unfortunately for Chicago, Velasquez is probably closer to his first three starts where he got roughed up and didn’t pitch past the 4th inning.

Red Sox Search For a Spark

The Boston Red Sox were on the verge of winning their last series against the Los Angeles Angels and coughed the lead in the 9th inning. They ultimately lost the game in extra innings and then lost the series by laying a complete dud and losing 8-0 yesterday.

Boston currently sits at 4th place in the American League East with a 10-16 record. Rich Hill started and threw five shutout innings, Tanner Houck was next and he got lit up. Houck gave up 7 earned runs in only 2.1 innings of work.

The Sox offense was shutout and Jackie Bradley Jr was the only player with multiple hits. The Red Sox hitters have surprisingly struggled at the plate with an average of only 3.5 runs per game and a paltry team batting average of .229.

Red Sox Nation will turn to Nathan Eovaldi to get back on track. Eovaldi is coming off his strongest start of the season with seven scoreless innings against the Baltimore Orioles.

He is 1-0 on the season with a 2.51 ERA and 0.94 WHIP across his five starts. Boston is going to need another stellar effort from Eovaldi because their hitting is in shambles.

Red Sox vs White Sox Prediction

The money line is set for -170 for the Boston Red Sox and +150 for the Chicago White Sox with a total of 8.5. Both of these teams have slumped due to anemic offenses, especially the Red Sox. However this is the definition of a get right spot.

Vince Velasquez is a great matchup for them, as he has been extremely hittable. His underlying metrics show no signs of improvement, his ERA is 4.58 with an an xERA of 6.17, he gives up a ton of hard contact and doesn’t get strikeouts.

Almost every Sox hitter has a successful track record against Velasquez. Part of me wants to take the Red Sox run line with Eovaldi pitching, but we will just rely on the Boston bats breaking through.

Prediction: Boston Red Sox Team Total Over 4.5 -110
