Rockies vs Cubs Analysis
The Chicago Cubs take on the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in the second of their four-game series. Hard-throwing righty Marcus Stroman goes against right-hander German Marquez.
Thursday night Chicago got to Kyle Freeland for five runs, and that’s all they needed for a 5-2 win.
Stroman Solid in First Start With Cubs
Frank Schwindel powered the north-siders offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and 2 RBI. 2B Nick Madrigal and C Yan Gomes also had two hits apiece.
Left-handed starter Justin Steele had a solid opening start pitching 4.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out four. The bullpen was able to maintain the lead with three relievers over 4.2 innings who struck out three, walked two and gave up a combined five hits.
Marcus Stroman comes off a really good 2021 with the Mets. He started 33 games and compiled a 3.02 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP in 179 innings, which is a very good season of work. If I was the Mets GM, I would have kept Stroman and not signed aging veteran Max Scherzer.
Home Runs Not Coming For Rockies
The Rockies had a hard time putting up runs Thursday night, although they got 10 hits – nine of them were singles. Conor Joe, Kris Bryant and C.J. Cron had two hits each, Charlie Blackmon continued his early season struggles going 0-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts.
Kyle Freeland struggled in his second consecutive home start, giving up five earned runs and nine hits in 5.1 innings. He only walked two batters but struck out just one, which means he’s pitching to contact a lot.
A pitcher needs to miss bats a lot more often than that to be successful in Coors Field or any other major league ballpark. The Rockies bullpen was solid and didn’t give up a run after Freeland left in the fifth inning. The relief corps struck out three and gave up one hit in 3.2 innings of work.
Right-hander German Marquez comes off a great opening start against the Dodgers. He pitched 7.0 innings, gave up five hits, one earned run and struck out five. He also has good career numbers with a 4.26 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.
Rockies vs Cubs Prediction
Betting Recommendation: It’s still early in the year and temperatures are still fairly low at Coors Field. Lower temps combined with the use of a humidor for the baseballs and struggling hitters equal fewer runs.
With the exception of the 9-4 wind-aided game on Sunday, the other three home games haven’t seen as many runs.
This is a trend from 2021 that’s carried into this season: The Rockies have played a lot more lower-scoring games than we’ve been used to in years past. When we get into the summer months, we’ll see more baseballs carrying further and more runs scored.
But for now, I still think we’ll see lower-scoring games in the month of April at the corner of 20th and Blake. Stroman and Marquez are solid starting pitchers and shouldn’t get into too much trouble the first two times through the lineup. That’s why I like the under 10 runs as my best bet.
Prediction: Under 10 Runs
