Rockies vs Giants Analysis

The San Francisco Giants visit Coors Field to play the Colorado Rockies in the first of a three game series. Southpaw Alex Wood takes the mound versus right-hander Antonio Senzatela.

Giants Preview

The Giants lost two of three to the Cardinals in St. Louis, while the Rox dropped two of three at home to the Kansas City Royals.

The series before last weekend, San Fran swept three from Colorado in Oracle Park. A quote from the late Dennis Green sums up my opinion on both teams to start the season: “They are who we thought they were!”

The Giants are a talented, well-managed team that gets timely hitting and good pitching. And they’ll contend for a playoff spot in September. The Rockies are a team that can really hit the baseball – especially at home and versus left-handed pitchers – but with really bad pitching. Their odds to contend for the playoffs are slim to none.

Starter Alex Wood has a 3-2 record in six starts, with a 3.60 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. He averages a strikeout per inning, and has only given up nine walks in 30 innings.

While the Giants bullpen has regressed the last couple weeks to an 18th best ERA of 3.68, they still have a big edge over the Rockies bullpen, which is dead last at 5.18.

San Fran’s hitting is solid with a ninth best OPS of .711 and team average of .244. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski are healthy and back in the lineup, so their lineup is back to full strength.

Rockies Preview

Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela has really struggled to start 2022. In 27.2 innings and six starts, he has a 4.95 ERA with a 1.95 WHIP.

He’s pitched to contact way too much, with only six strikeouts. While he’s been a reliable starter for Colorado the last few years, I don’t think he’ll remain a starter much longer unless he turns things around soon. The lineup is still performing well with a 4th best OPS of .735 and team average of .260.

It looks like the Rockies hitters have found their regular season groove, and so have their pitchers – but not in a good way. The Giants are a much better team that will steal bases whenever possible, and the Rox play a more station-to-station brand of baseball.

Stolen bases aren’t as sexy a stat as home runs, but a team that can steal bases can score more runs versus a team that doesn’t.

Colorado only has seven team steals, while the Giants have 20. I believe this is worth a half to a full run edge per game for the more aggressive team.

Rockies vs Giants Prediction

While Colorado plays and hits better at home, they’ve lost five of their last six – two to one of the worst teams in MLB. We’re getting a good price for the Giants at -150 and they’re just a better team – that’s why I’ll take San Francisco on the money line.

Prediction: San Francisco Giants Moneyline
