Rockies vs Nationals Analysis
The Washington Nationals travel to Coors Field to play the Colorado Rockies in the first of a three game series. Right-hander Erick Fedde gets the start against German Marquez.
Both teams come into tonight’s game with good momentum, winning both of their weekend series against the Giants and Reds.
Nationals Preview
After a really slow start to the season at the plate, the Nats broke out of their slump against the Giants with 45 hits and 28 runs in three games. Against one of the best pitching staffs in the majors.
Erick Fedde takes the hill for Washington, and hasn’t been very impressive this season. He has a 6.00 ERA and 1.56 WHIP, giving up 20 hits, eight walks and three home runs in 18,0 innings of work.
These aren’t a lot better than his career numbers over five-plus years in the majors. He has a career 5.29 ERA in 345 innings, with a 1.49 WHIP. These numbers don’t bode well for a pitcher who’s getting his next start at Coors Field.
Rockies Preview
The Rockies rebounded with a three-game sweep of the Reds, after getting swept four straight on the road against the Phillies. It looks like Colorado could follow the similar Jekyll-and-Hyde pattern of last year, where they play much better at home than on the road.
Although he’s struggled to begin the season, German Marquez has been one of the Rockies better starting pitchers in recent years. In each of the seasons from 2018 to 2021, he compiled a WHIP of 1.27 or less, and two of those seasons he finished with an ERA under 4.00. That’s pretty good when you play half your games at Coors Field.
After a great 7.0 inning opening start versus the Dodgers at home, he’s given up at least four earned runs in a home start against the Cubs and two against the Phillies – who are one of the best hitting teams in baseball.
In 21.0 innings and four starts, Marquez has an ERA of 5.57, a WHIP of 1.33, giving up 28 hits and four home runs, but only walking four. It looks like the right-hander could have some positive regression soon based on these career and 2022 numbers.
Rockies vs Nationals Prediction
I think this could be a “buy low” spot on Marquez, as he’s pitched well in Coors Field just a few weeks ago. Both teams bullpens are in the bottom six in baseball, and both lineups are producing the plate. That’s why I’ll take the Rockies 1st 5 innings on the money line.
Prediction: Colorado Rockies 1st 5 innings Moneyline
