Rockies vs Nationals Analysis
The Washington Nationals play the Colorado Rockies in Coors Field for the second of a three-game series. The Nats shocked the Rox last night with a 10-2 win as Erick Fedde pitched surprisingly well. Tonight, it’s a battle of southpaws as Patrick Corbin goes against Austin Gomber.
Nationals Preview
The Nats have figured out their hitting woes, exploding for 38 runs in the last four games. First baseman Josh Bell is really dialed in at the plate, with an NL leading on-base percentage of .464, .366 batting average and a 1.013 OPS.
He’s always hit well for power and a decent batting average (career .265), But when you combine that with the ability to get on base and have good hitters behind you in the lineup, that makes for a dangerous clean-up hitter and team.
In his first several starts, Patrick Corbin has been Joe Namath-type “stru-gl-ing.” Over 19.1 innings of work, the veteran has an ERA of 8.69, and a WHIP of 2.08. His career numbers are decent with a 4.15 ERA and 1.32 WHIP, so he’s due for some positive regression.
He threw a quality start in his last outing against the Marlins, going 6.0 innings, giving up four hits and two walks, and striking out eight.
Rockies Preview
However, his last start against Colorado was at home on September 18, and Corbin went 4.0 innings, gave up 10 hits, six earned runs and two home runs, and this right-handed heavy Rockies lineup has feasted on left-handed pitching this year. We’ll see if the good version or the gas-can version of Patrick Corbin shows up tonight at 20th and Blake.
Rockies starter Austin Gomber is off to a solid start to the 2022 season. After four starts and 21.0 innings, he’s 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. The Rox will need Gomber to pitch well tonight, as their bullpen still has the highest ERA of any staff in the majors at 4.85 and a WHIP of 1.46.
C.J. Cron has enjoyed playing at the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field, as he owns the fourth-best OPS in the majors at 1.047, with nine home runs and 22 RBI. And Randal Grichuk’s hitting has come around, with an .889 OPS and a .333 average.
Rockies vs Nationals Prediction
The Rockies have the highest OPS against LHP in the majors at .806, and they’re going against a lefty who’s given up a lot of hits and runs this season.
Meanwhile, the Nationals are one of the hottest teams in MLB at the plate. Last night’s cooler weather didn’t bother Washington, and I don’t see a similar forecast for tonight slowing them down, either. That’s why I like the full game over.
Prediction: Over 10.5 Total Runs Scored
