Rockies vs Royals Analysis

The Kansas City Royals visit Coors Field to play the Colorado Rockies in the first of a three game weekend series. Wily veteran Zach Greinke takes the bump against southpaw Kyle Freeland.

Both teams are looking to right the ship, after the Royals dropped two of three in Texas and the Rox lost all three games in San Francisco.

Royals Preview

Zach Greinke has had a great major league career, and is probably one of the most cerebral and creative pitchers in the league. And he’s got good numbers to start the season, with a 2.67 ERA and 1.10 WHIP.

However, he has just 10 strikeouts in 33.2 innings of work. Pitching to contact in Coors Field is the equivalent of lighting matches really close to gasoline: Eventually you’re gonna get burned.

The Royals got their offense going in the first two games in Arlington, but were shut down by Taylor Hearn and the Texas bullpen for just one run last night.

Hitting in altitude at Coors Field should help Kansas City at the plate. It may not result in a lot more long flies, but the Royals could see more extra base hits in the largest outfield in MLB.

Rockies Preview

The Rockies went “back to the future” in San Francisco, and not in a good way. They were never in any of the three games at Oracle Park. Offense was limited and the Giants figured out their starting pitchers and bullpen.

But the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field – and playing one of the worst teams in baseball – should be the tonic the Rockies need.

Kyle Freeland has struggled in his first several starts, but comes off a 2021 season where he gave up three runs or less in 15 of his last 18 starts.

He’s a Denver native and should know best about how to pitch at altitude. Based on his past performance and success, I’d expect better starts from the southpaw during the month of May.

Rockies vs Royals Prediction

Although the Royals get a boost hitting at elevation, I don’t think they have enough offense to keep pace with the Rockies. Colorado should get several hits and runs off Greinke, and tack on some more when the bullpen takes over.

I don’t have a lot of confidence in Kyle Freeland until he has at least one good start, and both bullpens are two of the worst in MLB. This sets up to be the classic type of Coors Field game where you see more runs scored. I think the over is a decent bet, but the better one is Colorado on the money line.

Prediction: Colorado Rockies Moneyline
