Royals vs White Sox Analysis

The Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals wrap up a marathon five game series from Kauffman Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The White Sox won the first two games of the series 5-3 and 3-0. The Royals bounced back, winning the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader 2-1 and then again yesterday 6-2.

Vince Velasquez will get the nod for Chicago in the rubber game, while Carlos Hernandez takes the mound for Kansas City. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 PM EST/ 11:10 AM PST for Thursdays matinee game.

Royal Rubber Match

The Kansas City Royals are looking to win their second series of the season against the Chicago White Sox but their record is still only 14-22. They were able to even the series 2-2 with a 6-2 victory last night.

Former Cy Young award winner Zack Greinke kept his teams head above water, allowing two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. Four bullpen arms combined for 3.1 scoreless innings to wrap up the victory.

The young shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. went 2 for 4 with a solo blast. Kansas City easily has one of the weakest lineups in the majors as they rank 27th in runs scored, wRC+ and ISO while ranking 28th in OPS.

Now they will be without last seasons homerun champ as Salvador Perez sprained his thumb earlier in the series. On Thursday they will hand the ball to one of the absolute worst starters in baseball.

Someone call for help as Carlos Hernandez has a pathetic 9.11 ERA with a dismal 2.03 WHIP. He has managed to have a lower strikeout percentage at 10% then walk rate at 11.5%, which is wild.

Chicago Deep Troubles at the Dish

The Chicago White Sox have a powerful lineup on paper but they have fallen well short of expectations on the field. This offense features plenty of talent and big names, yet they rank 26th in runs scored, 24th in wRC+ and 27th in OPS.

On Wednesday they could only muster up two runs, leadoff man Tim Anderson had three hits and an RBI but knowone was able to drive him in.

Lucas Giolito did enough to keep his team in the game with five innings of two run baseball. Reynaldo Lopez took his first loss of the season coming out of the bullpen with two runs allowed in two innings of work.

Vince Velasquez gets the start for Chicago, he has had a few bright spots but has ultimately struggled as well. He has a 2-3 record, 5.53 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. In his last start the Bronx Bombers took him to the mattresses with seven runs on eight hits across only five innings.

Royals vs White Sox Prediction

The money line is set for -144 for the Chicago White Sox and +125 for the Kansas City Royals with a total of 9.5. So we have two of the most anemic hitting teams in the league facing two of the most incompetent starting pitchers in game.

A potent offense would make for an easy over, a starting pitcher with a pulse would make for an easy under. Bottom line I trust the Pale Hose lineup much more than a Royal offense without Salvador Perez.

My first thought was a Royals team total under, but I can’t bring myself to trust Vince Velasquez. Still, I want nothing to do with the Royals right now, especially with Hernandez on the mound.

It’s juicy but let’s make a small play on the White Sox money line. This is the first game I’ve dug in on but there has to be better plays on the board today, even with a small slate.

Prediction: Chicago White Sox Moneyline -144
